TT4E's Top 10 James Bond Theme Songs
Posted on 11/18/08 at 11:59 pm
Posted on 11/18/08 at 11:59 pm
So Drew Kerr from NPR did a list of their top 'Bond Songs', and I thought it was total crap, so I'm doing my own (if you want to see theirs, click here
10. "We Have All The Time In The World" from 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service', written by John Barry and performed by Louis Armstrong LINK
This is a good way to start this top ten, because it features what is arguably the most unique voice in music history with 'Satchmo' singing this theme. The entire movie was much more 'sentimental' than most of the other 007 movies, and the themesong delighfully also represents that.
9. 'Die Another Day', written by David Arnold and performed by Madonna LINK
The Pierce Brosnan era of Bond Movies produced some of the crappiest theme songs, except for this last one. It is, of course, Madonna...and if you can get past your inherent hate for her, you'll see that this is a fairly catchy song, unique compared to the crap songs which recently preceded it, and had some form of commercial success outside of the box office.
8. 'Thunderball', written by John Barry and performed by Tom Jones LINK
Its Tom Jones, man...the most powerful voice of his generation. And when John Barry can compose a song that can 'in legendary stories' make even Tom Jones faint as he reportedly did when recording/singing the very last note, you know you have a powerful theme song (you can even hear him 'die off' at the end of the note as he's about to keel over).
7. "All Time High" from 'Octopussy', Written by John Barry, Lyrics by Tim Rice, and Sung by Rita Coolidge LINK
One of the overall best orchestrated scores to any of the Bond Movies, 'ATH' is a great theme song that has an unmistakable beginning for anyone who know's their Bond Movies with that saxophone rip. Rita Coolidge also gives a very romantic and sultry rendition of John Barry's tune. Amazing also how John Barry's tunes for these movies can 'stay with the times' progressing through decades. This tune definitely sounds very '80's to me.
6. "Nobody Does It Better" from "The Spy Who Loved Me" (Edited for Nostro), written by Marvin Hamlisch and performed by Carly Simon LINK
Very much in the same vain as Octopussy, this tune is unmistakable, and very powerful. Marvin Hamlisch is one of the most respected show tune composers, and his style is very prominent in this song with his 'piano cabaret' style, reminiscent of his compositions in 'A Chorus Line'. ...and yes, there was a time when Carly Simon was 'in'. She did a great job on this tune.
5. "You Only Live Twice", Written by John Barry and performed by Nancy Sinatra LINK
This is the only one from Drew Kerr's list that I wont argue about. I only have it this low because of how much I think of of the following tunes we'll hear. This song has everything a Bong Movie has, mystery, intrigue, sweeping panoramic views - all done with great orchestrations, and fantastic chord progressions. Nancy Sinatra makes for the perfect 'Bond Girl Songstress' also.
4. "For Your Eyes Only", Written by Bill Conti and performed by Sheena Easton LINK
What can I say, it was written by LSU's own Mega-Movie Composer Bill Conti. Sung by Sheena Easton, who was 'it' at the time the song/movie came out - this song was a mega hit and is still one of the most recognizable Bond Movie songs to people whom dont even really follow 007 movies.
3. Goldfinger, Written by John Barry and performed by Shirley Bassey LINK
The most recognizable villain in Bond history can only have a theme song written by the most powerful female voice..maybe ever. Shirley Bassey pierces your heart in this rare 007 theme song about the villain, and not James Bond. Any horn player can tell you just how hard it is to play those rips too. The sheer uniqueness of this tune musically and lyrically is what makes it so interesting to listen to.
2. Dr. No, Written by John Barry, and performed by the John Barry Orchestra LINK
Its the 'original' James Bond theme. In Wagnerian terms, its the Leitmotif that rules the entire James Bond franchise. You hear it in every movie, its the catalyst for one of the longest running film 'empires' in cinema. The universally recognizable theme employs elements of big band jazz with 'ahead of its time' 'pop' influences such as the unmistakable bass line. John Barry's use of the french horn in so many of his movies can be traced back to this theme (check out 'Dances with Wolves' if you ever have a chance). A true 'Tour de Force' in ranking all-time movie theme song popularity, up there with Star Wars and The Godfather.
and the #1 James Bond Them Song is...
"Live and Let Die", written by George Martin, and performed by Paul McCartney & Wings. LINK
This was quite simply the only song that could be placed even above the original Bond Theme Song. The transcendental and timeless qualities of this song have been very evident by the frequency in which its still performed today. Plus it just kicks arse. Paul McCartney hit the jackpot when he recorded this one. Compared to what had been written for Bond movies beforehand, this was a big departure from the big band songs of the past, and thrust the James Bond franchise into a new era of more rock-pop inspired themes, and the movie itself is just as wild as the song was. Even today, its the type of song that makes you drive a little faster on the highway if you hear it on your ipod.

Nice list...however, I can definitely do without the Madonna.
I've very partial to Shirley Bassey's "Diamonds Are Forever" as well as Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name"...definitely thought Diamonds should be on this list over Madonna.

good list but I think the Dr. No theme should be number 1 considering it is the definitive James Bond theme
after Dr. No, it goes:
1. Live and Let Die
2. Goldfinger
3. Thunderball
4. Diamonds are Forever
5. You Only Live Twice
6. The Man with the Golden Gun
7. You Know My Name- Casino Royale
speaking of bond themes, I think they really got it wrong with Quantum of Solace
I liked the bass and background music but the lyrics and duet were crap. Jack Black could have done better.

"Nobody Does it Better" is the name of the song in THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. Great song. I remember this song being played over Walter Payton highlights in the 70s and it gave me chills up and down my spine.

My reasoning for putting LALD above Dr. No is because its the only one of the theme songs that you could have replaced the Dr. No theme with completely as the 'James Bond' theme, and I think would have still stuck and had staying power.

Thats also a nice list, nothing really for me to argue about. Obviously, you prefer the older school John Barry Orchestra backed recordings. I like Diamonds are Forever and TMWTGG, but I just thought theres' only so much Shirley Bassey you can listen to to have more than one of her performed songs on the list lol. She does have one of those 'hate it or love it' voices.
You Know My Name I had just outside my top 10. It is a good song. Maybe with some time, and staying power, it will creep in there. I hated the visual intro, though, to Casino Royale.
I've heard the QOS song a couple of times, and it hasnt really 'stuck' with me yet - I guess I'm still waiting to hear/see it and how it jives in the context of the movie before I pass final judgement on it.
One observation I made (again, purely my opinion), is that the cheesier the movie, the better the theme song - on the whole (Moonraker's theme wasnt all that much to write home about).
So conversely, some of my favorite movies (or ones that I thought were great movies) didnt necessarily have the better theme songs.
This is not surprising. There are many instances in movie/theatre/opera history in which the song/music is longer lasting than the actual production it was composed for.

Reverse one and two and you got it right for me, but GREAT analysis. Thanks.

A View to a Kill-Duran Duran?
I know not considered cool these days, but then again neither is Sheenah Easton or Madonna.

I fricking hate Madonna.
There I said it.

Sheena Easton was smoking hot back then.

Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" is the best imo. I also love "For Your Eyes Only" and "View to a Kill"

I'd lose Madonna, and maybe the one from Octopussy, and add View to a Kill by Duran Duran, but everything else is right on.
The Spy who loved me and for Your Eyes Only are my favorites. The songs are awesome.

Your right, I really like the old school John Barry ones. They typify what a james bond theme is all about and set the tone for the rest of the movie. Its probably no coincidence that most of my picks are from my favorite Bond movies. Its kind of funny that I like all the old Bonds and the themes because I am only 23.

I thought the exact opposite, as most of my top themes are also my favorite and imo best Bond films.
Just out of curiosity, what are your favorite Bond films? Goldfinger has to be up there and that was a great theme.

Did you really bump a thread that's almost a year old?

Since it was already bumped, I'll answer those who keep saying that they like 'A View to a Kill' and would put it as their top song.
I had it just outside my top ten.
I hate Duran Duran (even moreso than Madonna)....The song itself I just didn't see as a great song as compared to some of the others that I had listed...
...but I did like the way that John Barry used the three themes from the song into the score throughout the movie. Its frankly the only thing that makes this particular James Bond movie even remotely watchable - as its one of the worst Bond movies overall....Certainly the worst Roger Moore flick. Hell - he was already 58 when he filmed it. He should have quit after Octopussy and let Timothy Dalton take over.
But go ahead and switch it for the Madonna song, those of you who like this one so much, it wouldn't really bother me. Putting it over the original Dr. No theme and/or Live and Let Die, though, is just purely ignorant - I'm sorry to say...

I definitely noticed this while watching the movie. It really helped out the escape from the fire and bridge scenes.
Yeah, I might have been a bit over the top putting View to a Kill #1, but I'd definitely have it in my top 5. Live and Let Die and Nobody Does It Better are two songs that have to be atop any list of Bond themes.
