Unpopular Opinion: Vincent Chase was a terrible actor.

While the show entourage displays a sort of “roller coaster” career for Vinnie Chase. After doing a rewatch, it’s clear he was just a terrible actor always. Let’s break down his filmography:
I won’t start with the TV or Traveller because they were small roles and too early in his career.
Head On: Head on was Vincent’s first real film role and not much is shown or mentioned in it except for that’s how he got his “big break.” Despite this film putting him on the map, he was joined by co-star Jessica Alba who likely carried the movie.
Queens Boulevard: This may be the film that displayed his best acting chops, however it was an indie which didn’t have the reach as most movies and the supporting cast likely helped in whatever accolades the film did receive. He co-stared with Ethan Suplee, Zooey Deschanel, and Robert Duvall.
Aquaman: Most will say “highest grossing movie of all time (at the time), but due to the off-screen drama with Mandy Moore and constant flipping on whether or not to do the movie he surely didn’t bring his all to the role. I firmly believe the only reason the film succeeded as it did was because of James Cameron being at the helm.
Medellin: I don’t even need an argument for this one.
Smoke Jumpers: Despite the director being overbearing and harsh, Vincent Chase couldn’t give him the performance he required. He may have been “good” as Dana Gordon and John Ellis (studio execs) claimed, but a good actor would be able to do a passable job for any director. Not to mention, it took literally someone dying for Vince to even be considered for the part, and as Verner (their director) stated, Chase was “shoved down his god-dammed fricking throat.” Screw job? Probably not.
Gatsby: The film seemed to be a very favorable gig for Chase, however he was rebuilding his career and while miraculously landing the role, I still think it’s the case of director clout that made the film successful. Plus, it’s an adaptation of a very recognizable novel.
Ferrari: There’s not much mention of his success with this role. He played the lead as Enzo, didn’t know how to drive until right before filming, and production was pushed back 3 months. Darabont is a big name so despite his performance the film was going to make money.
Madagascar II: Played Benji, anyone with a pulse can do voice-over work.
The Takeover: Nick Cassavetes, while not the strongest name in Hollywood, still puts out great films. Vince was talked into performing his own stunt in the car crash scene. Started taking pain pills, and got addicted. Shaved his head mid-production pissing off the studio and director. Once could argue his next downfall started here. Likely didn’t have his best performance for the rest of filming.
Air-Walker: Addicted to drugs, dating a porn-star, and generally not giving a frick is a sure-fire way to end a career. Vincent Chase played the hat trick and failed badly. Randall Wallace pulled out of directing. Studio put film on hold until drug test was completed. He had second thoughts about the script. Finished it, but certainly wasted a lot of people’s time and money by acting an arse.
I won’t count Hyde because it occurred in the film and not the series. Even if I did count it, they definitely hinted that Chase was in over his head. It swept the awards, but the movie sucked and therefore the plot was unbelievable anyway.
He touted as a very popular movie star and he may have been in name only. His acting clearly sucked.

It’s almost as if his character is based on Mark Wahlberg

His big brother was unequivocally the best actor in the history of cinema though.

Pretty much nailed it. Walberg is not a great actor. Pretty much just chills and plays himself. Has a brother not nearly as successful but has dabbled in the mainstream. This show is a Marky Mark biopic.

There's a Rewatchables category dedicated to this so I don't think this is an unpopular opinion.

Well, that's just patently false, top to bottom.
Yes, most on-camera actors who do VO are just reading lines, or they're ones who have just one gear and employing the only delivery they have.
Voice acting is acting. It's more than just standing in a dark box and talking to yourself. I've had video game sessions where the direction was so over-the-top and physical that I felt like I'd been in a fight by the time it was over.
If you're a bad actor, you're going to be a bad voice actor. The best voice actors I know could act circles around on-camera talent who often get paid 10X what superior VO actors would because of name recognition alone.

Funny thing is how the real Aquaman movie turned out to be truly awful. I know some superhero fans like it, but we couldn’t finish it. Pure shite in my opinion. Vinnie could’ve done better.

Maybe I’m misremembering but I thought it focused on his charisma and good looks more than his superior acting talent and the show didn’t really mince words with that.
His first movie was a cheesy thriller with Jessica Alba.

This is most unbiased post in the history of TD.

Fine. Have all of the other voice actors with 100+ credits to their name that post on TD weigh in.
Let's see if they feel differently.
ETA - I understand that we're talking about a character from Entourage, but unless the editorial comment is a quote from the show (which I have not seen), the point remains.

I don’t care what anyone says about Entourage, I’ll defend it to the death
I was in my mid 20s and it was a perfect 24 minute “turn your brain off” fun show. No more no less.

O
At best, he was mediocre, I’d say.

It was a joke my brother in Christ.

I only said that because you are obviously known as a VO actor… hence the “unbiased.”
