I don't watch it every time--in fact, haven't seen the entire thing but perhaps once since I saw it o the screen.
My two best memories from it were the great music and Bud riding the mechanical bull.

Urban Cowboy is Casablanca, The Notebook, and Roman Holiday for rednecks. Can't have a redneck love story without a little cheatin' and bruisin'.
For some reason one of the things I remember most from my first viewing of the movie is when Mickey Gilley is announcing the three contests (Dancing, Punching, Mechanical Bullriding) is him saying," It's gonna cost TEN dollars PER person PER event." My 12/13 year old arse was wondering WHO in the HELL had $30 dollars for such nonsense--those must be some RICH cowboys!
I also remember BUD getting paid $7/hr to be an insulation flunkie in a plant. Those were righteous bucks back then. Also that he got his job because of Uncle Bob. That's how it all works. You don't get a job like that unless you know someone.

He should have stayed with the rich girl instead of going back to Sissy though.
Why? She would have just moved on when she found a "cowboy" ; Bud was daddy issue revenge anyway.

Have to watch this when it comes on for some reason. One of the dumbest decisions ever made in a movie to go back to that trashy arse trailer park ho and not stay with Pam whose “daddy does oil, and all that that implies”. Dumbass Bud.

It’s “Roadhouse” worthy good/bad.

That run from 1980 to 1985 almost did JT in:
Urban Cowboy
Blow Out
Staying Alive
Two of a Kind
Perfect
Now, Urban Cowboy and Staying Alive, however awful, were box office successes. Blow Out has been regarded generally well over the years, but was a box office bomb. Two of a Kind and Perfect were critical and commercial failures. During this run, Travolta was nominated for 3 Worst Actor Razzies including Two of a Kind and Staying Alive in the same year.
Then the next decade nothing other than look who's talking movies. In grad school saw the trailer for Pulp Fiction, was the first time I seen Travolta on screen since I was in 4th grade. My friend sitting next to me, said 'that's Vinny Barbarino, didn't remember his really name.

First movie I saw him in since Urban Cowboy was The Experts.
That was 9 years after Urban Cowboy.
The 80s were a bust for him. He was considered a has-been.
Then Pulp Fiction rose him from the dead. Tarantino is funny like that. Travolta then Pam Grier then David Carradine.

I saw a bit on youtube the other day with Frank Stallone (might have been an old bit, but it was new to me) about doing the music for it. He went to Sly (who directed it) and pitched himself for the music. Frank does a great Sly impression, "I don't think so. It's going to be the Bee Gees." Then something fell through, and *BAM*, Frank got the music.

The scene where Wes (Scott Glenn) chews and swallows the worm at the bottom of a bottle of mezcal was not scripted, but an improvised joke that remains in the film.

Great summary, however, this aspect:
made them sneaky good as a kind of cautionary tale.

Patrick Swayze was a complete unknown in 1980. There's no way that he had a chance against Travolta. Other than, maybe, Burt Reynolds, Travolta was the biggest star on the planet after Grease and Saturday Night Fever.
