The ending was great especially with them showing Nick Nolte at the end. Great stuff.

I was on IMDB a while back and someone suggested that a sadder ending would have been even better. Or I guess a more ambiguous ending.

They felt if it showed Tommy extending his hand looking as if he's about to tap and then insteads clutches his hand. Then fade to black.

It would have allowed the viewers to wonder if Tommy decided to die or maybe actually live. It would have been an ending that pissed people off initially, but would have created a great deal of debate about it for a long time.

Thoughts? How would you have felt if Tommy died at the end or the director left it ambiguous as to who won/or if Tommy ever tapped out?

Died? Why the hell would he have died?

The theory is that..

If his brother never said "I love you Tommy, its ok"

Then Tommy would have kept fighting till his death. It took the brother to finally say that for Tommy to let go of the hate that was keeping his anger going.

Again, just a theory. That I've seen on youtube vids and IMDB

Well that's dumb. Pretty sure he would have passed out at some point before he died. Not sure how he would have died anyway. Fairly certain they would stop the fight before that

if he goes limp, they stop the fight.

the better alternate ending would be to have tommy not tapping and it going to the judges and bruce buffer announcing the winner to be (cut to black)

The movie would have been much better if they had either made Tommy less of a boss so that his washed up brother beating him was more believable, or if they had him fight the badass russian guy and suffer some kind of injury prior to the final fight.

In a normal MMA match the ref would have stopped the fight due to the broken arm.

completely agree.

while we're nitpicking, there is no way in hell they wouldn't figure out brendan and tommy were brothers until right before their match. they would have been advertising the hell out of it prior to that point.

eta

and they probably would have taken a point from tommy for the cheap shot in round 1

i'm not editing that post again, but the first was a 10-8 round. it was pretty clear that tommy won the second 10-9 (maybe 10-8), brendan won 3 & 4 10-9, 10-9 (maybe 10-8). if tommy goes the distance, it's a split decison (or a victory by tommy)

eta

assuming round 5 isn't awarded to brendan 10-8

So a better ending would of been if the older brother killed the younger brother? I dont really see it haha. But, i loved this movie. Not big into UFC and wasnt excited when I watched, but it had me on the emotional roller coaster ride the entire time. Noltes character was spot on, as was Tom Hardy.

interesting that you start this thread, i literally just watched this for the first time last night

but, tommy wouldnt have died, the ref wouldve stopped or his brother wouldve stopped when he felt his body go limp

tommy dying is ridiculous

My alternate ending would have been to have Koba hurt Tommys brother pretty bad (put him in the hospital) and Tommy fought Koba and absolutely worked him because he realized he loved his brother after seeing him get hurt/family situation/holding his dad in bed and learning to forgive.

Buy his brothers house for him and pay the widow the rest

i also thought it was very interesting that the Military decided they wouldnt arrest Tommy until AFTER the final fight

maybe they made that decision since he promised to give the winnings to a fallen soldier, but thats an interesting decision for the military to make

This movie fricking sucked like Training Day.
There was a great performance by an excellent actor, then a bunch of completely unbelievable shite happened.
Horribly written.
