Morals? No. Public nudity, underage alcohol consumption and fornication.
Backbone? Kinda but he never stepped up to Coach until Moxon led the way.
Decency? Add theft of a police vehicle and battery. Probably a few other infractions as well.

Exactly. Blue chippers stopped going to HBCUs in the 80s.

not surprised that the good folks at MTV studios in the late nineties didnt understand this nuance about college football and that they would have made Wendell look much better if they had said Nebraska or OU or some other lily white school.

You just completely missed the point. Kilmer screwing around with his touchdowns made him so anonymous that only one small school was looking at him. Would be pretty fricking stupid for him to be mad at Kilmer for taking away his touchdowns if he was still getting a Nebraska or Oklahoma offer.

He explicitly says that Kilmer didn't pick up the phone to call Texas Tech or A&M and that his mom had been doing his recruiting.

Because Kilmer is a dick. That's the point.

He’s a HS kid who stole a police car to get 2 HS chicks naked. If you think that reprehensible you’re gay. Didn’t do anything to the car and knows Kilmer got that so no big deal. Also doesn’t bother with Kilmers BS, just ignores him and goes about his business. Helps his buddies with the PKs which is much better than letting Kilmer shoot you up. Has no drama when all the other characters are drama queens. Works the system without the system even knowing he’s there and is the best football player on the team. Tweeter is the best Character by far.

If there was ever a sequel, Tweeter goes to Texas Tech and plays for leach. Leach was the OC at OU in 1999 and HC at Tech in 2000.

He was the perfect misfit for those tech teams. Walked so Wes Welker could run

The whole Wendell bit was just a poorly written “kick the dog” bit by the writers.

In universe, West Canaan was a powerhouse and Lance Harbor got a scholarship offer to Florida State. There are college scouts all over that place regardless of what’s on Wendell’s stat sheet. Any scout coming in to see Lance would also see Wendell.

Once it’s established that Lance is a 5-star type D1 prospect, the idea that you can hide another blue chipper by calling 1st and goal plays for another number goes out the window - the scouts are already in the stands, especially in the 1990’s.

This idea only works if you make Lance a mid-tier D2 prospect (which would still be a hell of a small town high school football player), with Wendell a D1 caliber player.

I’ve said this before too about Wendell, but he’s selfish. And it bugs me that he’s basically only cool with Mox once he says he’ll get Wendell into the endzone. He only cares about his stats and thinks it’s racist that Lance gets TDs. But to your point, Lance wouldn’t be getting an offer from FSU if all he was doing was handing it off to Wendell and scoring short TDs.

He didn’t have a problem with Lance. Kilmer would never call Wendell’s number deep in the red zone though.

Imagine if they made a Varsity Blues reboot with NIL being incorporated into the script. Imagine how many painkillers those players will use just to have that shot at big school and money.

That’s only cause they are in a dog shite division.22 division titles and 2 state championships, nothing to sneeze at but they made their bones beating up on tejano schools.

For example, Billy bob was way too fat to be a legit o-linemen. Katy would never let someone get that sloppy at LT.

You got to wonder who Texas was recruiting at QB. Mack was a star fricker so there had to be some bigger names if FSU can scoop in and take him from OU/Texas/a&m.

Are we sure lance was good?

I disagree. Watch that scene again. He goes off about how Kilmer “gives the ball to Lance or some white receiver” and how he’s just “Kilmer’s black workhorse.”

There is definitely some animosity or jealousy there toward Lance. I’m not saying he hates him or anything, but in that moment he’s all in on the “everybody hates me because I’m black” thing.
