Were the Matthews parents right for not helping Cory and Topanga?

I’m binge watching it on Hulu, and I’m on the last season. Cory and Topanga just got married and are back from their honeymoon.

They’re having trouble finding a place to live and no one seems to care (kinda their own fault). I found it strange that Corey’s parents were so hell bent on not giving them help. Not offering to help get them started for an apartment, not offering a down payment for a house, etc.

Corey did find a house, and asked his parents to use their house as collateral(which was dumb), but they didn’t even offer to counter it with offering to help with a down payment.

What would you parents do? I’m not married yet, but I figured when I do and have kids, I’d ask them where they would live before any kind of wedding ceremony. Maybe they were all stupid for not thinking ahead.

Does this even make sense? I'm pretty sure this doesn't even make sense. When you buy a house the mortgage is secured by the house you are buying.

Well, it was a tv show. However, I didn’t know that about mortgages.

Yeah, that's what foreclosing on a home means. It's when a person has defaulted on their mortgage, and the bank, or whatever other holder of the loan, seeks repayment of the remaining balance in the loan through their secured interest in the property. I get that it's a show and a kid's show at that, but it's just kind of a silly, basic thing that should be common knowledge for the vast majority of adults.

You can use a home equity loan to put a down payment on another house.

They were like 18. The dummies should have gotten a starter apartment.

ETA: And when I say "starter apartment" I mean a pos place with one bedroom and a toilet. Or they could have waited and saved some dough before rushing into marriage.

no, that was stupid. You don't help them buy stuff they can't afford, but you have to help your kids more than Alan was willing. He should have helped him with repairs, gave him some guidance if had any knowledge on repairs.

It was really stupid when he was able to use a wrench to clear the dirty water.

Ah, I see. I hadn't thought of that. I guess you just have to have enough equity to cover the down payment. I imagine that's much more common in rental or commercial properties.

Alan wanted Cory to work at the store. Thus, he was cut off.

If you decide to make an adult decision akin to marriage then you should expect your parents treat you as one.. he was proving a point that rash decisions have consequences

This.

They didn't have to buy the house for the kids, but what kind of a-hole tells his son to frick off when he calls asking for help getting the plumbing working? What a shitty father.

The kind of dad that's jealous cause he wants Topanga for himself. The other part that didn't make sense to me was how Shawn and Angela suddenly felt guilty about getting a great apartment.

She was on TV saying how she was ready to give it up to the gay NSYNC dude and he turned it down. What a schmuck.

He could get a personal loan for the down payment using the equity in his parents' home as collateral. Then mortgage the remaining balance on his own home.

They did. And Corey’s dad refused to help fix the plumbing because he wanted Corey and Topanga to have the experience of overcoming adversity together. He knew there would be bigger obstacles in the future, and he wanted them to have the little victories to look back on when things would seem insurmountable.
