What virus does Jenny die from in Forrest Gump

My first guess was AIDS, but Forrest Jr. would also have it because she would have contracted it during her druggie years.
Also, I just noticed for the first time that during the scene with John Lennon on the talk show the dialogue is the words to Imagine.

but she says shes got a virus that the doctors can't figure out. His mom dies from cancer.

Wasn't HIV/AIDs not fully understood during the time the movie was set?
I am assuming when he meets Forrest Jr it is in the mid 80's. HIV was still pretty much a mystery at that point.

Yeah I always thought Aids. And I'm pretty sure it's possible for a mother to have it and not pass it on to their kid, but I also always thought Forest would have been subjected to it too.(remember the first time she came back and she slept everyday, I'm sure she was sick then just before she got pregnant with Little Forest)

a baby has a 25% of contracting the HIV through birth (this is without treatment of course). HIV can also be passed through breast feeding (but i don't know the percentages). So, more than likely jenny had aids and didn't pass it to her son. i don't remember them saying jenny died of cancer, but aids can cause cancer, so...there you go. i always thought she had the hiv

I doubt it. They used a lot of historical references in the movie (granted Forrst wasn't an actual person), so I don't see them making up a disease.

I have always thought it was AIDS. Forrest easily could have gotten her pregnant without contracting it. Hell, they didn't even think you could get it from a woman back then, if I'm not mistaken.
