I know the prop master on it and always forget to ask him if it was mentioned by QT or if there actually was something in there for the actor react to ...

The subject of a lot of speculation. Some say Marsellus Wallace's soul. Some say gold. In the original script I believe it was diamonds, but they decided to keep it unstated and ambiguous. In reality it was just some lights to make it glow.

Gee thanks for telling us. We had no idea.

There have been some later theories that say pulp fiction is in the same universe as inglorious basterds, and it's nazi gold in the briefcase
ETA: This was somehow divisive it appears lol. I'm pretty certain that the briefcase it ambiguous on purpose. Just thought we were throwing out all the things we'd heard about

I want to say I read a while back that there's a superstition from some culture that a persons soul can escape them by pricking a hole in the back of their neck. Marsellus has a bandaid on the back of his neck when you first see him so that's what makes a lot of people buy into the "soul" theory.

The most persistent and ingenious theory is that what is inside the case is nothing short of the soul of gang kingpin Marsellus Wallace, who sold it to Satan and is trying to get it back. The imposing mob boss wears a Band-Aid on the back of his neck, reportedly because actor Ving Rhames has a scar there he wanted to hide for the iconic over-the-shoulder shot, but it's also been argued that when the devil takes your soul he takes it from the back of your neck. This neat esoteric factoid doesn't seem to be in the Bible, as messageboard amateur sleuths claim, or in some vague version of "Chinese mythology" (correct us if Google has served us poorly), but we like this theory's style. It would also explain why bullets miraculously miss Vincent and Jules in an apartment shooting – divine intervention is surely more likely to help your arse when you're on soul-saving business. And the briefcase combination? What else but 666.

I had always thought gold but the concept of Marcellus Wiley’s soul in it is much more interesting

So why would that group of white dudes have his soul?

I think Tarantino has directly come out and said that all of his movies take place in the same universe.

I thought it was drugs. Those guys got fronted a bunch of drugs and never paid up. They went into it with the best intentions.

At the end in the diner, Samuel Jackson opens it for the robber dude. He’s in awe, and asks if it’s really what he thinks it is. What would that guy think it is?

Although the "Marsellus' Soul" theory is most prevalent, the one I like to believe is that the case contains the diamonds from Reservoir Dogs. Somehow the case wound up in Brett's hands. One interesting idea is that after Pink is released from prison, he gets a job working at Jack Rabbit Slim's (as waiter Buddy Holly) -- ironic, considering his comments about tipping in Reservoir Dogs. He struck a deal w/ Marsellus for the diamonds he had stashed, and Brett was supposed to deliver them, but instead chose to frick Marsellus "like a bitch."

You must have had 4 hours to kill.
At least you get to catch up on every commercial ever made.
