Darlene Cates, best known for playing the housebound mother Bonnie in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, died in her sleep on Sunday, March 26. She was 69.
Cates’ daughter, Sheri Cates Morgan, announced the sad news in a Facebook post on Monday. “It is with a bitter-sweet heart that our precious wife, mother and Gaga, Darlene Guthrie Cates, was called Home, somewhat unexpectedly, peacefully in her sleep Sunday morning, March 26th,” she wrote. “We take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain and is in the arms of our Heavenly Father, breaking away only to dance with our Savior, Jesus. (Dancing was something she talked about loving to do ‘back in the day’!) For those who have already sent your love, texts and prayers, thank you.”

Did they burn the house down?

I wonder if she stayed that large her entire life.

the image of the car rolling down the street almost tipping over from her weight is some funny shite.
ETA:She underwent gastroplasty in 1981, when she weighed 408 lb (29 st 2 lb or 185 kg). She lost 99 lb (7 st 1 lb or 45 kg) but eventually gained the weight back and more, topping out at 548 lb (39 st 2 lb or 249 kg).
, Cates had lost 240 pounds after a series of 2010 health issues kept her hospitalized for nearly a year, and she expressed a desire to resume her acting career.

Really makes me rethink the whole healthy living = long life. That behemoth makes it 7 decades and Steve Prefontaine has to check out after barely two

I couldn't for the life of me tell you where, but I'm pretty sure I read that she made a reasonably successful effort to drop weight after the movie.

Didn't he die in a car wreck?

in the movie wasn't she supposed to be a former beauty queen?

My grandfather never skipped a day drinking bourbon or smoking a pipe except for weekdays during lent from the day he came back from WWII fighting the Japs until the day he had a stroke at age 88. He died a year later at 89 (2 years ago). Never worked out except for walking and never took prescription meds until the stroke.
It is all genetics. You either have it or you don't. Your life style only really tips it a few years in either direction unless you do heavy drugs.

car wrecks kind of cancel that whole concern of yours ...

It certainly helps. Anecdotes and outliers aren't a good reason to rethink anything in themselves. But the more important issue isn't length, it's quality. You notice how the announcement obliquely references the pain she was in? Healthy lifestyles go a long way toward healthier and happier old age. Nothing is guaranteed, but some things sure as frick help. You only get one life -- don't let something like this lead you to choices you can't take back.
