Which is better? The Wire or The Shield? About to start a little binge watching...

...this weekend. Will eventually watch both.

The Wire, easily. It's a masterpiece.

The wire by a billion miles. It’s a landmark TV program.
But it’s definitely not as straightforward as the Shield.

The Shield is good TV even great at times but The Wire is at least in the conversation for GOAT.
I envy you being able to start The Wire from scratch. That would have been an epic first impression binge.

They're just two impossibly different shows.
But both are some of the greatest shows in television history.
The Wire was a masterclass in building its city as the story, The Shield was a masterclass in telling an extremely tight-framed story.

I personally much prefer the Shield to the Wire.
And the Wire was great but it is a very slow burn.

It really is disappointing that The Shield often gets overlooked when discussing prestige television but the story it told freaking owned.

I love both for different reasons. The Wire by a mile.

Watch both first episodes. Each will hook you, but one will captivate you more. Watch that one, then the other. Watch both

For me it’s The Wire. The way each season focuses on a different group and then ties it all together in the end is great!

It's been a while since I have watched both but I seem to remember The Shield got better in it's later years and the final season ended on a bang which is rare for most shows. The Wire kind of fizzled out. While they followed a main storyline and characters throughout they also focused on a new "societal" theme every year (politicians, government, journalism) and those just weren't as compelling as the street crime foundation the show was built on.

I think the Wire is the best show ever.
The Shield is also awesome.
Definitely watch both.

I'm probably the oddball that prefers The Shield, although I recognize how good The Wire was at its best. The shows are extremely comparable in quality, particularly the acting and writing.
Both series used the city setting as a character unto itself (Baltimore for The Wire and Los Angeles for The Shield), about as effectively as any series, ever.
Having said that, and just to remind folks about Clark Johnson - he directed the pilot AND finale of both The Wire and The Shield. Also, he directed 3 of the first 5 episodes of each show. Therefore, his directorial style set the tone for both shows, however tempered by the respective show runners (and, in the case of The Shield, the great Scott Brazil.)
For fans of The Wire, Johnson (also an actor) had a prominent role in Season 5 as Gus Haynes, the ethical editor who battled the sensationalists at the paper. In The Shield, his only acting appearance was a cameo in the series finale (which he directed and that was his first time back to The Shield since those pivotal season 1 episodes).

The Wire.
The Shield is good, but it suffers a bit from being a network show. If it had been on HBO, I think certain episodes and characters would have had more of an impact.

The Wire. I will say this though. I rewatched The Shield for the first time since it was on television all those years ago. it has aged like fine wine. Incredible show.

Give me the Shield. The Wire is fantastic in its own right, but the cop storylines pale compared to the street storylines and the last season was just bad. The shield was consistently good all the way through and the storylines never let up but synced together brilliantly in the end.

I’ve watched both multiple times.
They are both so good. Both top 3 for me (Justified is other).
I think the shield has a slight edge for me. The wire has more compelling characters, but none are the level of Vic Mackey. Also, the shield has Walton goggins.
Now you got me thinking about a rewatch, just not sure which one!

I'm probably a bit biased but The Shield for me.
One of the most innovative shows of all-time w/great writing, directing, and acting.
