Quintessential Cagney gangster/prison movie, directed by Raoul Walsh.
Cagney is Arthur "Cody" Jarrett, a ruthless, psychotic criminal and leader of the Jarrett gang. Although married to Verna, he is overly attached to his equally crooked and determined mother, "Ma" Jarrett.
Cagney's character is a psychopathic criminal with a mother complex who makes a daring break from prison and leads his old gang in a chemical plant payroll heist
One of several iconic scenes is when Cody puts one of his enemies into a car truck, and when the man says he needs air, Cody unloads his pistol into the trunk.
Edmond O'Brien plays an undercover FBI agent who goes into prison to nail Cody for multiple murders.
Virginia Mayo is Cody's wife, Verna, attempts to double cross Cody while he is in prison.

One of the best of all time.

We only watched classic movies growing up. I knew I wanted to marry Virginia Mayo.

I've never seen a Cagney movie to confess, IIDK why....I was a devoted TCM fan. I remember Billy Crystal doing mocking impressions of him in I think Forget Paris....maybe that's why I never went down that path....his movies just weren't on.
I hope Prime has a Cagney collection because I need to rectify that wrong.

What??? You need to watch White Heat right away and then The Public Enemy. Follow that up with Angels With Dirty Faces and Mr. Roberts.

Cagney could do a little song and dance, too.

Interestingly, James Cagney never watched any of his gangster movies (such as White Heat and Public Enemy) but frequently viewed and enjoyed his song and dance movies.

I freaking love this movie. It has been way too long since I've seen it. I will remedy that real soon.

Cagney started out as a dancer. A very accomplished one at that!

Do you have the TCM app? They always have at least one Cagney in their selection.

Did not know that. George Raft started as a dancer as well. It's funny how those tough guys started out.
