Circa 2003. You know when they aired actual history documentaries and shows instead of the crap they do today.
Like what imbeciles watch “Beyond Oak Island” and think hey this is entertainment!

If you want WW2 shows the History Channel used to run, you have to go to AHC.
Although I just checked, and tonight it's running a marathon of "Inside Secret Societies."

Most specialty channels start out focused on a niche like music, history, cooking, travel, etc. Then they inevitably devolve into nothing but shitty reality and competition style shows, just like every other idiotic channel.
The reality/contest shows are cheaper to make than a well researched history documentary, and the morons eat them up. $$ says make more cheap, shitty shows.

Well you can only run those kind of documentaries until you've run out of content.

The "All Hitler All the Time" channel.

Prime has a channel that plays nothing but the old Modern Marvels episodes all day. Unsolved Mysteries too.

I'm flipping through the channel guide for History Channel and there's a nice five hour window from 7 AM - 12 PM on Saturday where they'll be airing World War I in HD, WW2 from Space, and a documentary about Hiroshima. And then they promptly go back to airing a marathon about Pawn Stars.

My FiL absolutely loves Oak Island. We give him hell about it but he’s convinced that they’re going to find it some day.
I wouldn’t call him an imbecile but he is a redneck out in West Texas.

20 yrs ago THC was the third most popular channel among adult men (after the two ESPNs). It went reality TV anyway.
Reality TV draws more young and especially more female viewers, who are viewed as more desirable by advertisers

There's so much cool actual history that can be put into programming that isn't it's such a shame.
YouTube has taken up the slack where THC left of though.
Channels like Kosmographia(Randall Carlson), Bright Insight and UnchartedX, just to name a few. So much info that was never touched on in HS or college. It's amazing.

quote:The irony is that The History Channel was an offshoot of A&E. In the 90’s, A&E was known as “The Nazi Channel” because they played WWll documentaries throughout the day. Then they’d switch to actual arts and entertainment in prime time and late night. Eventually they spun the WWII programming off onto its own History Channel and replaced it with all day reruns of Law and Order.

They used to run this like 5 minute "History Channel Classroom" thing at like 6:55AM on weekday mornings. It would be like 30 year old short documentaries about something like Ellis Island.
Those were awesome.

Those were the good days. I used to watch it all of the time and my old man called it The Hitler Channel.
Now its all about Nazi gold or Nazis and the occult. The good documentaries are on streaming services and YouTube.

The Military History Channel is usually good.

I mentioned to my wife last night how a history channel that did nothing but N American history would be awesome. Show documentaries on Kennewick Man, early Native American cultures like Clovis. How the landscape was formed by glaciers, or maybe the early French and Spanish explorers. The fur trade and the French and Indian wars.
