Even with the hyperbole, that's an understatement.

Candy could have you laughing at him in one scene, and then rip your heart out in the next.

the only thing they had in common was being fat. Candy could do everything Farley did, but Farley couldn't do everything Candy did.
You think Farley could have played Barf or Gus Polanski or Uncle Buck? No chance.

Well, these two were played by Candy when he was pushing being a decade older than Farley was when he died, so I will so "no".

I suspect the answer is generational, but Farley couldn't hold Candy's jock. And I like Farley, but Candy is one of the all-time great comic actors, who was also capable of great pathos.
Farley couldn't pull off anything like Candy's speech in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Nor was he in a movie as funny as Stripes (or at least the first half of Stripes before everyone did a bit too much cocaine). Also, Candy's SCTV stuff is flat out brilliant. Hell, even some of his lesser movies like Armed and Dangerous are just as good as Farley's best work.
I don't want to knock Farley. He was great. But John Candy was next level.

Neither. Fat comics aren't funny. Downvote away.

I am really late to this thread. I love Farley, but this is a total clown question.

You could maybe argue that this question would be legitimate if Farley was still alive today, but still...

I found Chris Farley's humor pretty lame to be honest.
John Candy on the other hand...is one of the best

Farley was funnier on SNL than Candy was on SCTV. Not even close. That had more to do with writing than Candy's ability.
Most of you would gouge your eyes out if I made you watch 5 hours of SCTV.
Candy had a tremendously better movie career and had much better range than Farley who was a one trick pony.
Candy wins and it really isn't a difficult decision.

I recently watched Only the Lonely on Netflix with Ally Sheedy and John Candy.
The script is god awful...it's so fricking dumb - it's like a 2 minute...skit turned into a movie.
But it's not a bad movie.
John Candy could carry almost anything. Sheedy was boring and dowdy...Maureen O'Hara was an old witch.
The movie was basically...okay, whats the next pitch...John Candy falls in love but...?
(and he carries Planes and Trains...Martin, in hindsight sort of seems bored in that and frankly is carried by Candy.)
Candy could really fricking act.

Candy easily, but it would have been interesting to see if Farley would have evolved. Sadly we will never know.
However,
Bees! Bees! Bees in the car! Bees everywhere! God, they're huge! They're ripping my flesh off! Run away, your firearms are useless against them!

I think Farley is far and way funnier than Candy.
