Why couldn’t Chuck Noland just sail the other direction to leave the island?

Cast away makes it look like Chuck needed the seasonal winds to change in order to get enough wind to push him past the tidal surf.

Since he was on an island surrounded by water, couldn’t he have just sailed in the opposite direction after finding the port-o-let piece?

I guess, if he could have gotten his raft to a beach on the other side over land.

Haven't seen it in years, but did he have any approximation of where he was from the flight path? The other side of the island could've been a much longer trip to potential mainland.

they explained this, when he got to top of hill/mountain he could see the only break in the reef that would allow you to cross was on that side of the island, thats why
