Is it supposed to be some kind of Instagram-like effect?

Hollywood loves them some orange and blue

as someone who briefly watched all 3 CSI's i think it was done intentionally. vegas was dark but it's light was very neon and vegas-y. also i think the shift that we follow in vegas is the night shift more or less.
miami is mostly set during the day and is pastel-led the frick out. bc it's miami. they wanted it to contrast greatly with the feel of vegas.
NY was just dark and gloomy. it seemed like in their day shots it was always overcast. also i think done purposefully.
i haven't seen a new epi of any of these in like 3 yrs but used to check them all out.

That's an interesting link, guess I never noticed since they're pretty clearly copycatting each other.
A couple films that color filtered pretty effectively that I did notice were Saving Private Ryan with the stark colors and Falling Down, which was tinted yellow and made the viewer feel beat as beat down as DFENS by LA by the end.

The CSI's intentionally use color filters to set the mood.
CSI NY uses Blue
CSI Miami uses Orange
CSI uses a Green shade
The same colors are used for the DVD boxsets of their respective series.

I hate when they do that. The Matrix was green and Michael Bay movies always have a certain color to them.
