Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary • Now on Max

Watched this and realized that I had no concept of what the originators of the "Yacht Rock" nomenclature had in mind when they retroactively named the genre. I assumed that it was easy-listening that was appropriate for or adjacent to the beach or boating, but they were using "yacht" as a metaphor for upper class/high quality rock with a certain signature L.A. sound.
Besides the ironic love shown with the usual "hey look at me, I love Yacht Rock" B.S., they focus on how Steely Dan and Toto were the backbone of an unnamed genre that ruled the charts in the late 70's and early 80's. Steely Dan as the band that producers wanted to emulate, and Toto as the session musicians that were the Wrecking Crew of their day.
And of course, Michael McDonald as the Forrest Gump of the genre, moving from band to band and session to session to give the category a signature vocal sound.
This doc isn't The Last Waltz in any shape or form, but it's entertaining and provides a lot of smiles.

My wife and I enjoyed it. She unironically likes Yacht Rock because that was her mother's genre. So she listened to it a lot growing up.
Steely Dan HATING the moniker yacht rock is very on brand for them

I need to watch this. I love yacht rock and am certainly a product of that time.

Will definitely check it out..
However, do yourself a favor and watch the 13 episode history of yacht rock on YouTube.
It's a hilarious comedy dramatization of all the yacht rock groups.
Note : it is 17 years old and came out at the infancy of YouTube so the production value is sub par. But the characters (especially Hall & Oats) are great.

It's funny that they interviewed Fred Armisen. He has that Documentary Now! episode with Bill Hader about what's basically a yacht rock band. Also has one of my favorite random Shreveport references.

I'll have to watch this. I've seen Steely Dan a few times, once with Michael McDonald opening and playing with Steely during their set. I've also seen Toto once.

The Podcast Full Cast and Crew had an episode around Memorial Day about Yatch Rock. Before the term Yatch Rock it was the “West Coast Sound” he argues true “Yatch Rock” ha certain characteristics including being recorded in LA with heavy session players and certain melancholic themes of lost love and boredom. He even includes links to 2 great playlists.

I watched it & loved it. But I was shocked there was no mention at all(that I can remember) of quite possibly the greatest yacht rock song of all time, Baby Come Back by Player. That was a #1 song on the charts that year that it came out in the late 70’s. Maybe they didn’t have the rights to use it or the guys from Player didn’t want it mentioned in the documentary.

Fun fact: One of the band members was so good looking, he went on to become a major soap opera star.

Actually blaring yacht rock on a yacht in Dubai will be one of my favorite travel memories ever

I didn't read Baby Come Back...I heard it play in my head and quite possibly will hear it the rest of the day now.

The wife and I just finished watching this. Very entertaining and well done.

We enjoyed it.
It gave me a lot more respect for Kenny Loggins. His is not my kind of music, but the dude knows how to write some hits. The royalty checks must be staggering.

Don't blame 'em
I wouldn't put Steely Dan in that genre either. They're a very hard band to categorize and Yacht Rock is not anywhere close to where they belong.
They were almost exclusively played on AOR stations when they first gained traction. Is "Kid Charlemagne" "Dirty Work" "FM" "Deacon Blues" close to Yacht Rock?
Hall & Oats,Toto, Christopher Cross and Michael McDonald are quintessential Yacht Rock artist not Steely Dan.

Steely Dan is way more Yacht Rock than Hall and Oats. Steely has lots of Yacht Rock in them. Not every song, but it’s there.
Folks don’t really know what Yacht Rock is and will throw any soft rock in there.
