Hackman got no screen credit and was perfectly happy about it.
Watch "Bride of Frankenstein" and you'll see how Mel Brooks copied it, hilariously, shot for shot

just heard that line was improvised and they had to use the first take and cut to black because everyone started laughing and could get through another take without laughing

Mel Brooks was a huge part of my childhood with this and Blazing Saddles, and I am better for it.

Watched the Gene Wilder doc recently and am pretty sure this movie was his idea, and he wrote the screenplay. I know Mel directed it, and may have helped write it, but I always just assumed it was another completely Mel Brooks’ joint. And Hackman does kill it in this scene.
Weird, these 2 Genes were all-time movie stars, but not with classically movie star good lucks. Hackman may have been considered somewhat handsome when he was younger. But their unique charisma was powerful enough hold the camera and come through on the big screen. I doubt either would have been allowed to have as big of careers in modern day Hollywood. Would probably have been relegated to character actors. No shame on that, but with the right project, these 2 were both leading men.
