Time flies. I think I saw him about a year before with Brian Setzer as the opening act.
This one with his brother hits me in the feels.

I was in a band at the time and I was at the drummer's house when we found out. That guy about had a breakdown.

Saw him just a few months before at the Jazzfest in Nola. Was in complete shock when I heard the news.

Too bad it wasn’t Clapton.

Wow…maybe you don’t like Clapton but what a total classless thing to say.

Maybe and it’s not that I don’t like Clapton but if I had to pick I wish SRV was still here.

That's the way I read it. For those that don't know, SRV had done a show with Clapton and there were 5 helicopters taking everyone, crew, agents and band, back to the hotel. Clapton said he went straight to bed and didn't know the helicopter with SRV, Clapton's agent and 2 of Clapton's crew had crashed until 7am.

I was at his last show. I grew up a couple of hours north of Alpine Valley and got home just in time for my dad to roust me out to the barn to help him milk cows. Finished milking and turned on a radio to do morning chores and the news came across about the helicopter crash. It was very surreal.

We saw him and Jeff Beck co-headliner tour at Cobo Hall in Detroit November 1989. They switched every night leading off the concerts.
Sad to say both are gone now..

I had tickets to the next show he was scheduled to play with Clapton in Kansas City. I've been to funerals with a less somber atmosphere than that concert. (Clapton played with no opening act.)

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Robert Cray and Buddy Guy were also playing that night.
Luck of the draw on who was on that helicopter.
Kind of like the night Waylon gave up his seat on the plane that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and The Big Bopper.
Who knows what would have changed in the music world if any one is switched out for another.
Sad that we didn't get to see every single one of them grow and expand into whatever things they were going to do.

Yes they were. Clapton talks about how both those guys watched SRV from side stage and we're in awe of his playing.

They were. SRV was the opener and he was definitely at his best. Clapton was the headliner but SRV was much, much better that night,
For an encore Clapton, SRV, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, and Jimmie Vaughn did a 15-20 minute jam of Sweet Home Chicago.
