I would argue that The Allman Brothers aren't a true Southern Rock band. While there music utilized the distinct elements of country and rock found among the Southern Rock genre, their implementation of jazz arrangements sets them apart from their peers.
Like I said.

I would argue that CCR is more of a Southern Rock band than Greg, Duane, and Company.
To the extent a southern rock band can come from the San Francisco Bay area.

Agreed. And it ain't close

is it even a competition?
Yes, it is. Lynyrd Skynyrd put Southern Rock on the map. The Allman Brothers never came close to achieving the same commercial success as Lynyrd Skynyrd.
While their songwriting may not be groundbreaking, Ronnie knew how to write anthems for the people of Dixie. Nobody shouts "Sweet Melissa" or "Midnight Rider" at nearly every single concert held in the last 40 years. Lynyrd Skynyrd could have quit after their debut and still would have been the best Southern Rock band of all time.

Swinging Medallions . . . holy shite. Cyril Vetter of Baton Rouge wrote Double Shot and sold it. Became a massive frigging hit (have no idea if Cyril retained royalties or sold it outright). Every time a local band at a local dance plugged in, they started hearing cries for "Double Shot".

Lynyrd Skynyrd is not very good.

Nicki Minaj sells a lot of music too, so that makes her better than any artists with less sales right?

Skynyrd sucks arse

Exactly....they were really, really good. Steve is right about the "pronounced" album...it's a masterpiece. ABB and skynyrd are a tie for me with Charlie Daniels Band taking 3rd place.

I think I got over saturated with Skynyrd when I was young and I just got tired of it. I used to like them a lot and I still love a couple songs.

I can go with this.
Can't even list to Free Bird, Sweet Home, anymore.
Gimme Three Steps is so stinkin redneck it is more of a joke song.
Some, like Tuesday's Gone, I can still listen to.

That's about the worst metric you could choose. Yes they were much more than a Southern rock band but they defined what Southern rock was well before LS came along.

Exactly. Stones, Elvis and the Beatles were just not that good.

I guess I never took that as an appreciative nod to LS... if anything, more of a joke..
looks like this debate will depend on which end of the southern rock spectrum you fall on... redneck or hippy..
My vote would go to the DBTs, but thats just personal preference...

Same here. I think their 3-album stretch of Southern Rock Opera, Decoration Day, and Dirty South rivals that of any band in history. Right up there with the Stones' peak. Huge fan.

When I read the thread title, my first thought was this will turn into a discussion of whether The Allman Brothers are southern rock.
Anyone else have Southern Fried Rock from K-Tel? I played the hell out of that 8 track.
Track Listing:
1. Ozark Mountain Daredevils- If You Want to Go to Heaven
2, Blackfoot- Train Train
3. The Charlie Daniels Band- The Devil Went Down to Georgia
4. The Allman Brothers- Ramblin’ Man
5. 38 Special- Rockin’ Into the Night
6. Black Oak Arkansas- Jim Dandy
7. Molly Hatchet- Flirtin’ With Disaster
8. Pure Prairie League- Amie
9. Bellamy Brothers- Let Your Love Flow
10. Elvin Bishop- Fooled Around and Fell In Love
11. Wet Willie- Keep On Smiling
12. Atlanta Rhythm Section- So Into You
13. Greg Allman- Midnight Rider
14. The Outlaws- There Goes Another Love Song
15. Marshall Tucker Band- Heard It In a Love Song
(Not one Skynyrd song. Probably too expensive to get the rights.)

I am going with The Allman Brothers
With Duane, they're a clear winner. Without Duane? I give the pre-crash Skynyrd a slight edge.
ABB had better players and a slightly better live show. Skynyrd had more songs that I like.
Outlaws, Blackfoot, .38 Special, etc. - are all, generally derivative and related acts. Certainly they did some good things, but they pale in comparison to the big 2.
ETA: I consider the CDB a country act with a rock vibe, not a true "southern rock" band. If so, they're up there with ABB and Skynyrd, but probably in 3rd.

Commercial popularity does not mean "Best." Nothing against LS, but the fact that they are more popular at a NASCAR tailgate doesn't mean they are better.
