I just listened to this song for the first time and damn is it addictive to listen to, and I’m only 23. The slow paced heavy riffs makes the lyrics more impactful. This is one of the best classic/hard rock songs I’ve listened to. Wish I was alive in this era of music

Bread version > Cake version, but I love them both. Next on your list should be The Poetry Man.

Great song.

You remind me of my son who is around your age.

Tho' he is a fan of modern music, he was raised on Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Neil Young, etc.

Makes for a great balance.

This was a hard hitter for me after my separation and divorce.

Most people equate the song with a broken relationship, and they're not wrong. David Gates wrote it in memory of his father, like Dan Fogelberg's "Leader of the Band".

David Gates explains it here.

I played in a gut-bucket blues band out of BR way back in the day. We got hired to play some rich peoples' wedding who really dug what we did: shuffles in E, swamp pop, etc...kinda like what The Fabulous Thunderbirds did before they hit it big. Anyway, the newly wedded couple had a strange request for their first dance: If by Bread. It was totally out of character for us to cover that song, but for the price they paid us we played the shite out of it, and I sang my arse on it. True story, so there.

Lots of folks think this is a song about a relationship, but it's actually about David Gates missing his deceased dad.

Bread had a spectacular and exhausting run in the early 70's. Something like 3 albums in 18 months. By late 1974 the band was burnt out...the had a comeback a few years later but it did not last.

Gates actually left music and became a cattle farmer in California.

Me and wife saw Bread live in the LSU Assembly Center circa 1972-73. Great concert.

By the way, if you like Guitar Man, check out Do That To Me One More Time by the Captain and Tennille.

I used the lyrics for Bread's "IF" for one of my poems in 8th grade English class.
My teacher acted like she didn't know, but I know she did.
