INXS - Listen Like Thieves Album

My formidable years were the 1980s and I certainly remember INXS and the Listen Line Thieves album, but I haven’t listened to it since the ‘80s. Somehow a song from the album popped up on a playlist me and my wife were listening to while cooking dinner the other night. The next day I pulled the album up and listened to it and I have to say… that was a really strong piece of work by those guys that has been somewhat lost to time. They were not very strong musicians, but they had some well written songs over the course of their career. Anyway, there were a bunch of hits and very little filler material on that particular album. I’m much more of a ‘70s guitar band fan, but the album deserves a listen if want to dig something out of the vault.

This is one of those things where the original fans and purists appreciated the early work most. But, you have to respect that Kick is up there for all time great pop/rock albums, too. Who among us wasn't singing Never Tear Us Apart to a girlfriend?

INXS - walk down memory lane … Top 10 songs
I too was a teenager growing up in the 80’s. MTV was the vehicle that launched so many “First Wave” bands. Soundtracks from movies including: The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, 16 Candles, etc.. took the hit songs and bands to a whole new listening audience. Often times I’ll hear a song by INXS, Berlin, Thompson Twins, Thomas Dolby, Roxy Music, Human League, the Motels, or The Psychedelic Furs and it reminds me of certain high school memories, parties, cars I drove, & girls I dated. When looking back , time flies by so fast .

I think KICK is their best album with LLT in second. Michael Hutchence was an all time great front-man.

Yes, great album. Those guys were the shite back then. I saw them twice in New Orleans in those days--opening for the Go-Go's at the 1984 World's Fair and headlining at the Municipal Auditorium (Public Image Ltd with Johnny Rotten opened).
I had a cassette with "Shabooh, Shoobah" on one side and "The Swing" on the other. Wore that sucker out.

INXS put out some very strong music from a pop/rock standpoint. Individually they were average musicians, although Kurt Pengilly was pretty talented with his multi instruments. But,together they were very solid and in sync especially live. The band had the Ferris Brothers at the core....there is something to be said with having most of your band living under the same roof.
Michael Hutchence though was maybe one of the best front men in rock...he had the it and star factor. It is hard to believe it has been almost 25 years since he died.

INXS last rehearsal the day before Hutchence passed.
Sad to watch, but he was still giving his all. You can see in his eyes he is battling demons, but he still had it.
So much talent in that band.

I love early INXS. Don't Change, The One Thing, and Kiss The Dirt are all great songs from the 80s. Their later stuff was great too. But they were getting plenty of radio and Mtv play by then, so I'll always lean more towards their earlier songs.

Saw that one and the LLT tour at Saenger. My buddy literally got tossed out the side door for jumping up on stage.
I lean towards the early up until kick. Kick got played into the ground. However, I did hear one of their later tunes the other day and thought the same thing, That was a great band.

I liked that album. I saw them in St. Louis off that tour.
The band was tight. ... except the sax player. He couldn't stay in tune or in time to save his life.

Great band with great songs and a front man who was fantastic. That Wembley concert they re-released a couple of years ago is definitely a watch

Quirky, sublime, haunting.

They didn't play super complicated music in the vein of say, Allan Holdsworth or Frank Zappa, but INXS were very strong musicians - great songwriting first off, great guitarists who created many cool riffs, great rhythm section, and quite a frontman as well.
You always know it's INXS when you hear them, and that counts for a whole helluva lot.
