Yes. He is great at putting together really complex compositions that sound both very different from most other producers and catchy as all get out. He's arrogant and makes music in a style that I don't really like all that much, but he is absolutely a genius-level master at his craft. What he is doing with music is incredibly difficult.

No

Because he has 5+ producers on most of his tracks. He pays people to make his music.

He's good at rhyming words, which isn't a musical skill.

No, because Bach and Beethoven are defined as genius. KW knows how to push digital buttons.

This is not really true. He started off as a producer and basically produced all his early stuff by himself.

He’s gotten more help later in his career but it seems like he still does the vast majority of the work.

ironically rapping is probably his worst skill. His songwriting and producing are far more impressive

He doesn't, look up the track listing on the albums from the past like 10 years or so like I just unfortunately did. He also has multiple people rapping on the same tracks that have multiple producers. His albums are like a house party where everyone gets a turn and he stamps his name on it.

I get people don't realise what really goes into making an album, and these days (2005 and up)..its soooooo much easier than it used to be even back in the 90s.

Let's see him mic a cab, dial in an amp, tune a guitar..much less a drumkit. Then, actually play every instrument, record it and mix it.

Let's see him just play the smells like teen spirit solo for starters before he's crowned a musical genius.

Making dense electronic compositions is significantly more difficult than miking up cabs and playing simple dad rock. I know this from experience. I find that people frequently both overestimate and underestimate how difficult it is to play music and make high quality music records. I also think it's the height of ignorance to say what Kanye does as a producer is "just pushing buttons", or to challenge him to play a jazzmaster to prove his musical manhood. It takes a lot of different skills to make different kinds of music.

1. The fact you had to look that up means you aren’t really familiar with his music

2. It’s not like he just puts anyone on his album. He knows who he wants where and plugs them in. He thinks of other artists as instruments to use. He’s thinking “I want Rihanna here, I want Jay-Z there”. Not to mention he will often write the verses for these people.

You can say he’s not a genius for certain reasons, but saying it’s because other people make music for him is ridiculous. He made his career as a producer. The only reason he has a rap career is because he single-handedly made a bunch of hit songs for Jay-Z. He is the lone producer on his first album and it won several album of the years. So it’s hard to take you seriously when you say other people make music for him.

Over the last year or so i’ve found myself more and more intrigued by him. Beforehand i probably only knew a few songs since i didn’t really listen to rap.

I was curious why someone in his mid 40s who doesn’t fit it in with the style of rap we see today is able to turn the world upside down every time he announces an album.

So when Donda came out I tried listening to it and found i liked it more than a lot of other Hip Hop. So over time i started getting more into his discography and being amazed by all the songs and melodies i knew but didn’t realize were him.

I never thought of him as a musical genius, just a really solid music mind, but I was talking with a friend today who tried to convince me he was in fact a musical genius.

He’s won 24 Grammys across 4 different genres and has managed to remain relevant longer than any rapper in history. He’s also written some incredible lyrics (and some awful ones). A year ago i would’ve thought not but now i think it’s a worthy debate.

metal, not dad rock. Thats incredibly difficult to capture and make all instruments fit into a mix. Most electronic shite is premixed and compressed anyways. Try micing up a drum kit in the right room, fricking dipshit.

Learn about what you're talking about and quit making me be mean.

No.

It does not take creative genius to compile, sample or cobble together compositions in the modern era. I give him credit for understanding the market and having a good ear for what will sell.

But, genius in the same way classical composers or blues/jazz/pop/rock/country songwriters in the golden age of pop music? No. Not hardly.

What metal artist has used live drums in the last 20 years!? It's all pre-mixed, with electronic elements, programmed out the arse. I know because I've made it myself in every way imaginable.
