I've got a confession to make...Foo Fighters Concert

So last night the Foo Fighters played in Pelham outside of Bham.
I don't know if I had just built it up in my mind for so long...I had always wanted to see them and actually had tickets 2 different times and something came up.
Once my wife ended up with a work opportunity and the last time they cancelled because of Taylor Hawkins death.
It was just okay....They sounded great and maybe it was just the whole evening. Got there an storms were all around...They opened the door late. Opener, The Pretty Reckless was supposed to go on at 7:30, with delays for rain it ended up 8:45...They only played 5 songs and were off at 9:15.
Foo Fighters started at around 9:35....
So my gripe...As I said they sounded great, but and I will freely admit that I am not a fan of Jam Bands...Just seemed like all night long no matter what the song with maybe the exception of one they all lasted like 8-10 minutes...
Several had the very slower acoustic intro that last for sometimes 1-2 verses and then they had a dramatic pause like almost at the end and then the song would go on for a repeat or another verse.
This was just about all night long.

I wholeheartedly agree. That would have been an absolutely painful concert for me to sit through.
Now, let us prepare our ani together to to be downvoted into oblvion on this board.

To each their own, but to your preference would you have rather they played the songs exactly like they are on the album?

Yes…play it like the album. Is that so wrong?

Personal preference, of course, but I prefer something that lets me know I'm seeing a live show and not just a recital. It can get to be too much, (Bob Dylan) but I do enjoy some jamming. The better bands know how far to take it, usually.

I’ll get my opportunity in Louisville September 21 to see them. I expect it to be great.

Well let me just say that I am by no means a Concert Virgin or Novice....In fact last night was my 232nd concert...And i will go further and say that with the exception of probably about 20 casino shows the majority have been at major venues...
So with that being said no I do not expect the album version. I expect some variation and/or different version. But there were probably 7-8 songs that started with that real slow almost acoustic version of Grohl singing into the mic while slowly playing the first verse of the song before the band would come in. In some cases it would be two verses.
Every song does need the 4 minute build up and then the big band entry and that is what it seemed like all night.

Looks like they’ve playing Bonnaroo tomorrow night and they’re streaming sets on Hulu. Will have to check it out since I haven’t seen them post-Taylor.

I love live music but have decided that it is its own thing as a…product. I (we) want to hear the same sound from the album but it often won’t be that way. So you have to adjust expectations and appreciate it for what it is.
$0.02.
$0.02.

My son went and saw them in Arkansas last week. This spring he's seen Bob Weir and Wolf Bros, Dead and Co., Caamp, Mavis Staples, Tyler Childers, and the Cure. I asked him where FF's ranked out of those shows, and he said at the bottom. Take that for what it's worth, he's only 15 so... whatever.

Saw them in Rockville a few years ago they didn't do that. Just the usual live version of album songs and some adlibs but nothing crazy. Maybe they've changed since Hawkins.
Mostly came in here to say Counting Crows is the absolute fricking worst at this and I will never see them live again.

Just curious how old are you ?
You mentioned 232 concerts, what do define as major venues ... Superdome, The Forum in Inglewood, Wembly Stadium, MS-CC-Biloxi, the OMNI, Tipitina's, HOB, The Gorge, Alpine Valley, Caesars Palace ???
who are your favorite artists and what 4-5 concerts / venues were the best ?
I'm 55 and have been to a boat load of live concerts since 1981. There's a HUGE difference in acoustic clarity between Giants Stadium in E. Rutherford vs. The Fillmore in SF. IMO, The Who (Astrodome) and the Rolling Stones (Superdome) both sucked sound-wise, whereas Ronnie James Dio at The Varsity was amazing. Steely Dan at The Woodlands amphitheater sounded exactly like a studio album as they were extremely tight.
I have no problem with jam bands and their concerts. I like improvisational shite that has never been played before and takes your mind into deep outer space. Bela Fleck or Billy Strings may perform in 5 different cities and never play the same song twice, as each set list is completely unique.
Bands such as Aerosmith, Foo, GnR, etc ... tour to support a new album and play the EXACT same setlist at every city/venue. What they play in Mexico City is the same setlist played in San Diego, Boston, Tampa, Minneapolis, Seattle, Belgium, San Paolo, Japan, etc ... to me that's boring AF. These bands have a discography of hundreds of songs yet play the same 18+ songs in the exact same order for the entire year long tour. I saw Dead & Co. in ATL last month and they played Terrapin > Dark Star. Only the 3rd time those songs have ever been played back-to-back in 46 yrs, and the first time since 1977.
I guess music is all about different strokes for different folks.

That's...new.
I've seen them 3x, albeit well in the past, and they were always really tight and focused....

Same. I've seen them 3-4 times and sometimes they'll do a longer breakdown on Pretender or All my Life but that's about it.

Just saw them at Bonnaroo and they put on a great show but like others said not entirely different from their other shows. Dave did have his daughter sing with him as well as Hayley Williams singing My Hero

I don't blame you...I like the FF, but I wouldn't want to hear them jam all night either.
