Jeff Buckley - Death

Jeff Buckley's death always left me baffled. Per the Wikipedia entry:
"On the evening of May 29, 1997, Buckley's band flew to Memphis to join him in his studio to work on his new material. The same evening, Buckley went swimming fully dressed in Wolf River Harbor, a slack water channel of the Mississippi River, singing the chorus of "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin. Keith Foti, a roadie in Buckley's band, remained on shore. After moving a radio and guitar out of reach of the wake from a passing tugboat, Foti looked up to see that Buckley had vanished. A rescue effort that night and the morning after by scuba teams and police failed to discover him. On June 4, passengers on the American Queen riverboat spotted his body in the Wolf River caught in some branches, and he was brought to land.
Buckley's autopsy showed no signs of drugs or alcohol in his system, and the death was ruled an accidental drowning. The official Jeff Buckley website published a statement saying that his death was not mysterious and was not a suicide."
The autopsy shows that drugs or alcohol was not in his symptom, arguably, something one would need to have in their system to swim in Wolf River. That thing is disgusting. It's got a fair share of traffic and it's filled with brown muddy water, trash, and moccasins.
Also, who swims fully dressed?
Why "Whole Lotta Love?"
Accident? Intentional? What do you think?

I always thought he must have taken something previously to make him do that. I think making yourself drown would not be a popular mode of suicide and I can't think of anyone in their right mind thinking that swimming in the Mississippi was a good idea. It is ashame because I think if he was still alive today he would be one of the most widely acclaimed artists of our time. Also what kind of a jackass friend did he have that wouldn't keep an eye on him after he got in?

he was clearly tripping on LSD which would not have showed up in a drug test. mystery solved.

Seems like just a dumbass mistake.
What could have been....

Didn't his dad also drown in the Mississippi?

When younger we would swim in the Mississippi. No drugs or anything influencing us to do it. Just simple dumb youth.
So yeah I can see this being legit. Sometimes you just do reactionary things on a whim.

Buckley was 30 years old, not 13. Also, did you swim fully clothed? I don't know, it just never made any sense to me.

Fair points. I always assumed he was drunk or something, but yeah a sober fully clothed dip is indeed odd.

Maybe he'd recently had a hearty snack and didn't wait the appropriate amount of time afterwards.
When I was a kid, the lifeguards acted like if you didn't wait half an hour after your bologna sandwich you'd sink straight to the bottom.

Accident?
I think we have to go with Occam's Razor, here. No evidence of drugs, alcohol or mental illness. He was reportedly only an experimenter with drugs (his father died from a drug overdose, IIRC). He was reportedly a good swimmer and had one silly things like swim fully clothed before, on that same trip to Memphis, also IIRC.
Suicides almost always leave a note. Suicides are rarely in front of people, and even jumpers typically balk if they think someone they know is watching.
So, without a note, I doubt it is a suicide.
So, crazy as this particular story is, I'm going with accident until the evidence steers us in another direction.

I don’t think suicide but it seems like he may have had some kind of mental breakdown
