In the song towards the end he's talking about the showdown with the kid and the outlaws who killed his dad. He sings,

"The shadows stretched across the land,
as the shots rang out down the Rio Grande.
When the smoke had finally cleared the street,
the men lay at the ranger's feet.
Legend tells to this very day,
that shot's were coming from an alley way.
But no one knows who held the gun,
there ain't no doubt if you ask someone... in Lonesome Dove."

Question: Who was doing the extra shooting? The mom or the kids dead father as a ghost or something.

Who do you think when you hear that part?

I know, I know... I should go ask someone in Lonesome Dove.

I always wonder that when I hear that song. Am I weird or has anyone else thought about this?

I never thought about it to be honest....just assumed it was the mother/widow since that's what the song is mainly about. It also talks about her learning to fight in the chorus.

Good song though

I agree that's the most logical answer, but you would think she would get credit for it.

However, the way he sings it, it's kinda mysterious/legendary leading me to believe it could have been someone else. If it was her, why not just say she got her revenge and helped her son survive?
