Milli Vanilli

I was listening to Blame It on the Rain last night, and it occurred to me that one would have to be pretty stupid, or at least gullible, to believe that it was sung by anyone other than a big American black man. My thought was "that sounds like a guy from Florence, AL" and then I googled it and he was from Anderson, SC. What's painfully obvious is that is wasn't a couple of eurotrash dance club kids doing the singing.
On top of that, even at the time my reaction was "who cares?". So it wasn't those cool-looking dreadlock dudes singing. Is it no longer good music? Why did Milli Vanilli basically disappear from the airwaves and the record store, for decades? It's not as if when I listen to Beethoven, say, I'm thinking, "wow, the guy who wrote this stuff must have been really cool and slayed and been amazing to party with."

They were hired for their dancing ability and to fake the singing.
They also sucked at dancing....

You're not wrong, but I think it makes people feel stupid listening to it.

Why weren't the grammy's given to the actual singers and musicians who made the songs? Why did they not get a record deal?
Just shows how superficial the music business is. It has to be about looks.

Whenever I hear Milli Vanilli and Girl I'm Gonna Miss You, I think of Eric and Lyle Menendez

I feel more ripped off by all the fake 60s groups who used the Wrecking Crew to record songs instead of their own members.

I saw Milli Vanilli on the Club MTV Tour in 1989. It was them, Information Society, Was (Not Was), Paula Abdul, Tone Loc and Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. I believe all the acts lip synced except Was (Not Was). At the beginning of Milli Vanilli's set the tape either malfunctioned or they missed the cues and left the stage twice looking visibly irritated before everything matched up on third go around.

The guitarist is the main force behind The Boneshakers, which is a really good blues band.

Whoever made that decision fvcked up big time. It wasn't even a great idea to begin with, and for those who followed and played out this stupid scheme, shame on them. Sooner or later they were going to get caught, something had to give, and it happened pretty soon at the time.
Why wouldn't they come up with the idea of keeping and presenting the original singers and having Rob & Fab as a "chorus/backing vocals" or as "dancers" during their presentations? Very similar to what Earth, Wind & Fire did in their heyday. They had over 12+ members at once on stage.
There's a video on YT showing the real Millie Vanilli "Keep on Running" which would have been perfect for the band had they kept the same concept in that video. It shows the real singers singing and Rob & Fab dancing and singing along.
I remember when the band got busted they were accepting full refunds at the record stores. I kept mine and still have the LP. Good times.

After watching the Mendez Bros on Netflix it brought me back a little. Those songs are still good imo. They were never over played, because of the scandal and forgotten about.

I saw them at Astroworld. By that time they admitted they did not sing at their shows to focus on dancing. Happened right before the bomb was dropped.
Also concert was free with season pass just to clarify.

I always felt like Milli Vanilli got a raw deal.....they got outed for lip synching and not writing their material. Half the artists put there today lip synch on tour and didn't write their own shite

It’s weird. Like two years after Milli Vanilli, C&C Music Factory hits big. Doing the exact same thing.
No one cares.
No one cares.

Lol yeah but they were lip syncing to songs that they didn't write OR sing

Will have to watch. It always got me that they were not outed sooner in that both of them had really thick accents .

And....it works both ways. I guess you'd have to be pretty stupid, or at least gullible, to think this song could be sung by anyone other than an American black man.
Oops.
