I have multiple CD's and downloaded music/live albums of both artists. Gabriel's album So is a classic. One of my favorite songs is the live version of BIKO Collins gets the nod for most successful solo career based on his better studio albums, and more Top 10 singles.

Collins. He is more successful and more threaded into the 80’s.
Gabriel is more of a musical nerd artist. You gotta be a musician, geek, or that contrary guy to really pick him over Collins.
Or people who loved Genesis and believe A or B killed the band.
Of all of both artists songs that were played to death, Sledgehammer was the most annoying to me. Another reason for my vote for Collins.

I think you can argue that Peter Gabriel is a better pure musician. It’s perfectly reasonable to like Gabriels music better, thays just a matter of taste.
But i don’t think you can make the arguemebt that Gabriels solos career was the more successful of the 2.
Phil Collins was one of the most successful solos acts of the 80s.

Clearly Phil Collins had more commercial success - particularly in the 1980s when that mattered. Peter Gabriel is more widely respected as an artist, particularly a songwriter.
Apples to oranges, other than their time together in the early lineup of Genesis.
Genesis for that matter had more success after Gabriel. Gabriel's song about that period of time - Solsbury Hill - remains the GOAT "fork in the road" song.

I like them both. I love Gabriel's 'Digging In The Dirt'. If you listen to Collins' 'Hello I Must Be Going' album - it has a lot of good stuff on there and not just filler. I would say Collins is more successful. Hell, he was able to buy so much Texas and Alamo artifacts and donate it!

Successful for the artist or for the listener?
Collins for the former and Gabriel for the latter. That damn Tarzan soundtrack alone disqualifies Collins from the latter.

Sounds like a question for Patrick Bateman.

Collins ran rougshod through the 80’s.
Along with still having the Genesis platform, his huge solo hits and movie soundtracks made him ubiqitous as Ford,Tide and Apple Pie.
But Gabriel was weaved into pop culture very much as well
But kept it weird.
These guys are almost like The Prestige with real magic and spectacle. The question is which is Borden and which is Angiers.
Gabriel might be both.

I liked both in Genesis, up to Abacab, after that Genesis was un-listenable. My favorite Genesis album was LAMB, so I lean towards PG with Genesis.
Gabriel started his solo career well before Collins and is still touring and releasing material. His last album Up was an excellent album. I saw PG live a couple of years ago and he can still bring it.
In terms of breadth and depth of career, it is no contest. I liked Collins first solo album a lot when it came out. It was great. After that Collins put out shite. Sussudio is one of the most God-awful pieces of crap ever released.
