Back in highschool in the 90s I went on a huge JW binge. I've never much like The Eagles, but Walsh's solo stuff struck a cord with me. This song is what caught my attention and started that ride. Love it!

I've ripped many a heater-j to that one and his James Gang stuff.

He has a unique voice and vocal delivery. Life's Been Good is maybe his best song. But the body of work is impressive, when you consider how important he was to The James Gang, his short-term, but significant impact at the end of The Eagles' productive period, and his solo career.

Plus, he is a great character from that era of rock and roll clowns.

And, unexpectedly, Walsh shows up in this song (credited only as "dirty" guitar - the main, clean guitar work on the track is by underrated Michael Landau, you can hear a couple of passages of a distorted guitar in places, and that is Joe Walsh - once you hear it, you can't unhear it). In fact, Landau does most of the work on the album, but Walsh and Luke contribute on a few tracks.

It's pop, but it was a massive hit.

(E.g at 1:34 or so, in relative isolation, but I think he plays most of the distorted rhythm on the track underneath Landau's clean leads and rhythm. Luke doesn't appear on the track.)

Also when the Eagles were touring in 1977 and 1978 and were taking forever to finish recording The Long Run Walsh would play this song and change the lyrics in the "they write me letters tell me I'm great" line to "Joe Smith calls me tells me I'm late." At the time Joe Smith was the head of Elecktra/Asylum records, their record label.

A couple of years after the Rocky Mountain fame died down, and before the Eagles, he had an amazing backing band with Willie Weeks on bass. Almost took on a jazz/rock vibe, ala Weather Report. He reworked Funk 49 and Walk Away into slower, blues/jazz pieces. Unfortuantely, that group never got recorded.

Felder's book is a must-read for any Eagles fan. Sure, it's his side, but still very interesting. Walsh and Schmidt don't come off very well in it in parts.

Didn't Frey mellow out in his later years?
