Song Facts: Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon

This song is a lot of fun...with one of the catchiest rhymes I've come across - "Little ole lady got mutilated late last night". Never realized some of the Fleetwood people sang back up on it.

quote:
Werewolves Of London
Warren Zevon
Zevon wrote this with guitarist Robert "Waddy" Wachtel. When Zevon was working with The Everly Brothers, he hired Wachtel to play in their backing band. At one point, Phil Everly asked them to write a dance song for the Everly Brothers called "Werewolves Of London." Wachtel and Zevon were good friends and were strumming guitars together when someone asked what they were playing. Zevon replied, "Werewolves Of London," and Wachtel started howling. Zevon came up with the line "I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand," and they traded lyrics back and forth until they had their song.
Jackson Browne produced this track. It features the backing vocals of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie from Fleetwood Mac.
According to legend, a Werewolf is a man who turns into a wolf when there is a full moon. The only way to kill one is to shoot it through the heart with a silver bullet.
This was featured in the 1986 movie The Color Of Money, starring Paul Newman and Tom Cruise. Robbie Robertson from The Band put together the soundtrack.
The lyrics tell the story of "a hairy-handed gent who ran amok in Kent." He's well-dressed ("I'd like to meet his tailor"), well-groomed ("His hair was perfect"), and "preying on little old ladies."
The Chinese restaurant mentioned in the song, "Lee Ho Fook," is a real location. It is situated on Gerrard Street in London's Chinatown (the nearest Tube station is Piccadilly). The patron proudly displays Zevon's photo.
When Zevon played this live, he sometimes replaced the line "I'd like to meet his tailor" with "And he's looking for James Taylor!"
In 1981, John Landis directed a movie called An American Werewolf In London. He went on to direct Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video, which featured Jackson as a Werewolf.
This was the only Top 40 hit for Zevon as a singer. His "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" was #31 for Linda Ronstadt in 1978.
Zevon filled in for bandleader/keyboardist/producer Paul Shaffer at Late Night With David Letterman whenever Shaffer was unable to attend the taping of the show. Letterman was a big fan of Zevon, and did some very moving interviews with him before his death, including one in which Zevon gave this advice: "Enjoy every sandwich."
In 2000, a fight broke out while Zevon was performing this at the Bowery Ballroom in New York. Zevon stopped, waited for the fight to end, said "I bet this never happens at Sting concerts," and continued the song.
There was a minor league baseball team in London, Ontario (Canada) called the London Werewolves.
Jesse Ventura had this played at his inauguration party when he became governor of Minnesota.
Zevon died of lung cancer in 2003. He lived with the disease longer than doctors expected and made his last album, The Wind, while he was dying.
In some versions, Zevon mentioned the actor Jack Nicholson in the lyrics, often replacing the werewolf in the last verse.
Kid Rock sampled this on his hit "All Summer Long."

Love all these tidbits.
One jumped out at me:
I knew this guy as a session player (Mark Curry's "It's Only Time" and Sandler's band for "What the Hell Happened to Me?")
Had no idea he had bona fide rock writing cred. Amazing.
Also, the author of this has no idea what "patron" means.

Yea, interesting back stories to that song.
It's a shame that Wachtel ended up being a pedophile.

In his last appearance on Letterman, after his performance he gave an autographed guitar to Dave, for Dave’s young son. Awesome show that night. Mutineer was amazing. Props to Dave for it being only Warren that night. I always wondered if it truly bothered Warren that he was widely misunderstood. Hopefully that night he had some sort of validation. If not, he at least spent an hour with a true friend and we are better because of it.
I just remembered when Letterman received the Twain award several years ago, Eddie Vedder sang Keep Me In Your Heart and thanked Dave for introducing him to Warren’s music.

I've seen WSP over 200 times so they get nothing but the deepest love from me. Have seen them cover Carmelita, the great Zevon tune.
To your comment about cover bands, I read a stat the other day and it said the Grateful Dead had about 350+ cover songs in their repertoire with roughly 150ish originals

Wachtel was arrested in 1998 on suspicion of possession of child pornography after images were found on a computer he had at home.[6][7][8] Wachtel pleaded no contest and was placed on probation for three years.[9]
Musician Brett Tuggle defended Wachtel saying "there is no way that Stevie would have him in her band if she thought he was guilty of any wrongdoing."[10] A detective of the Los Angeles juvenile sex crimes division reported that Wachtel produced copies of the computer-stored images which he kept in his bedroom
Yikes. He still plays with Stevie today, as far as I know.

Zevon was sort of a big thing in the mid 70s to early 80s. Linda Ronstat covered several of his songs, and he was part of that So Cal singer/songwriter clique but obviously a bit more of a rocker than the rest. He had a fantastic run of 3 albums with his second one (self named) and then Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School, followed by Excitable Boy. Saw him live about 4 times during that span, and he always drew a nice crowd.

Wachtel is very famous in the industry. Has played on so many people's albums, and touring backup. Also later as a Producer. So many bands I love have Wachtel, Ladanyi, Rubin, etc..listed as Producer.
Ladanyi and Wachtel spiffed up The Church for Starfish, and American fame, albeit whether those lo-fi Australian mystics liked it or not.
