Steve Gaines, What Could Have Been

One of my all time favorite bands is Lynyrd Skynyrd. I’ve been listening to them since I was a kid. One thing I’ve felt strongly about for awhile is that we missed out on so much great music that could have been made due to the tragedy of the plane crash. One of the members that died, Steve Gaines, was such an exceptional talent. Man, this guy could sing and play guitar with the best of them. We only got to have one album with Steve playing with Skynyrd, but what a showcase that album was for him. I only wonder what could have been. He could have been mentioned with the all-time greats. He was incredibly talented and gone too soon. That crash changed things bigly in the “what could have been” category.

Agreed. IMO, the most talented of the LS guitarist. Vocally gifted as well. His solo stuff is really good.

Man, ain’t that the truth. I would have loved to see what RVZ could have done as well. I had heard that he possibly was going to pursue a solo career as a country artist, which I think would have fit him perfectly.

The ultimate "what if" to me. There was so much talent in that band and they had a massive future ahead of them.

RVZ was a genius songwriter and ultimate front-man. However, what you said is correct. He also unfortunately was a mean drunk when on the road. Ed King stated that when he was home, he was fine, but on the road when he was drinking, he could be a nightmare.

Ronnie had cleaned up his act a bit by the time Gaines joined the band … “That Smell” was a message on one level to Gary Rossington who hadn’t .., and he was so impressed by Gaines’ talent that he brought him into his orbit as a collaborator in a way that he never did with the others. That’s the saddest what if, what they might have produced.

He basically made Ed King quit. RVZ got physical with the band regularly on the road.
I actually think Ed was the most talented musician from LS. Steve was an incredible guitar player and a better showman, but Ed was a gifted composer, some of the most memorable stuff came from him. They leaned on him early for song ideas in the studio.
I do think RVZ learned from how he treated Ed King by the way he seemed to be grooming and showcasing Gaines.

That actually is a fun fact.
RVZ always seemed like a peaceful person, but certainly had the drive and ambition to take a band out of a garage and to the mainstream. Back when they did what they did… you had to earn it the hard way to get your music out. It takes a madman (somewhat) to drive that train.

Re>control freak, he did … aside from Freebird … insist that the group pretty much sound like the records on stage, he was not about to let any of the guitarists including Gaines do an Eruption live.

I really wasn't aware of his impact/talent until I started to try and play his Free Bird bassline perfectly.
