The Grateful Dead - Overrated?

I've touched on this before, but now that we have a music board, I'd like to touch on it again.
I believe that The Grateful Dead are one of the most overrated bands in history. They have some decent songs, but overall, I just do not see the appeal.
I've had people explain to me that they are a concert band, and maybe that is the problem. I just can't really listen to their studio albums.
Am I the only one who thinks this way?

Im a huge deadhead, but there are plenty of people that dont get it.
I think jerry garcia described it the best, the dead are like black licorice, people that like it, really really like it. while other people hate it.

I don't think so. They made some great music imo. And considering how fricked up they were when making it is even more impressive. Jerry Garcia was an awesome musician..

Thats the beautiful thing about music, to each his own. If you were gonna come on here spewing about how terrible they were and jerry cant play guitar, im sure this conversation would take a different turn.

overrated? dunno, but i don't get the whole dead thing. i went and saw them in L'Ville. bruce hornsby sat in on keys when their keyboard passed away.jerry was out of tune and the band was not very good. the fans were cool to hang out with...

They are my dad's favorite band. However, I have never been a huge fan. I like a few of their songs: Touch of Grey, Truckin and Casey Jones, but for the most part, I never saw what the infatuation was over them.

I'm not a huge dead fan... I really only like American Beauty/Working Man's Dead era. I've liked their output best when they are focused and to the point.
But, I think a lot of the following transcends just the music...

Overrated. They have some really good songs but I don't get the following. Although my patience for jam bands is minuscule. Dead, Phish, Widespread Panic, etc. all seem way too liked by people. I get it, you can play guitar well. I don't need a 14 minute jam of you and a bongo player jerking each other off.

I have never bought any of their music. I like exactly 5 of their songs. As someone who cannot call themselves a fan, I simply can't buy the overrated deal. They have made some really, really good stuff.

Just because you don't enjoy jam bands does not mean that all of them are overrated. That's just, like, your opinion, man.

That is my opinion. That's why the thread was started. So Scruffy could see what other people thought. I think they're overrated. You don't.

I'm a huge grateful dead fan, but I can see where you're coming from. i don't try to proselytize the dead because if you don't get it, you don't get it and its darn near impossible to turn someone on. overrated, i don't agree with that term, but i understand not liking jam bands. my best friend loves acoustic guitar/lyrics driven songs, i love music driven jam songs. it takes all kinds.
