I know only Levon Helm (Turkey Scratch, AR) is from the South, but I consider The Band to be Southern Rock.
I was surprised they weren’t mentioned.
My tip three then are
1 The Allman Brothers
1a The Band
1b Skynyrd

we talking southern rock bands or southern rock bands?
It appears from the OP he means Southern Rock as a category not geography.
In that case I don’t include ZZ Top

As much as I love Col Bruce/ARU and REM are one of my top 5 all time, neither are southern rock.
NMAS are basically a bar band with a speck of notoriety from their days of friendship with Widespread Panic.
Panic and Col. Bruce/ARU are in the jam band genre.

So? The thread is top Southern Rock bands not top bands from the South.

Splitting hairs. Is the emphasis on southern or southern rock. They are different. REM is a rock band that happens to be southern but doesn’t fit the genre. Little Feat is a rock band that can be looped into the genre but don’t fit geographically. If we’re counting Little Feat, then I’ll revise my list.

Yeah, we’re talking about a sub genre, a musical style derived from certain influences that results in a certain sound. Not location of where a band may have started.
“It developed from rock and roll, country music, and blues and is focused generally on electric guitars and vocals.”

ZZ Top and SRV are not Southern Rock in my book.
Totally different sounds from Skynrd, .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Allman Bros. and the Outlaws.

Not that they are going to rate top 5 in most people's opinion, but I am surprised no one has mentioned Point Blank. That was a solid southern rock band even if they never achieved much notoriety.
I actually got to see them open for .38 Special and CDB back in the early 80's.
One of the best shows I ever saw, and they held their own with those guys.
I would encourage you music lovers to dig some PB up and check them out.
