I turned 16 in the mid 90s. I was a guitar player that favored classic rock. We played some 90s stuff but mostly we cared about the classics, Zep, Skynyrd, Stones etc. Now that Im in my 40s I go back to that music when I was young and reevalute it. I think you can make the argument that "In the Meantime" by Spacehog is a top definitive song of the 90s. Its unique and when I hear it I immediatly go back to that moment. One Headlight is right there with it.

What say you my 90s brethren?

Also I think Chris Cornell was the greatest singer of our time but didnt care for Soundgardens work so much. Audioslave was a superior band IMO.

In regards of my music obsessed friend group, I'm the only one that thinks this, but I'll keep on fricking saying Audioslave is better than Soundgarden. I just always thought Audioslave was that good.

In the Meantime is definitely THE definitive song of the 90’s. I really can’t think of a more 90’s song

Agree...

That along with Smells Like Teen Spirit and Loser are the first that come to mind when you say "Give me a song that defines the 90s".

I thought the 90s were great... but most of the songs listed do that decade no justice...

I had to get 30+ seconds into that song In the Meantime before I recognized it..

Need more indie rock/britpop/alt. country

I agree it’s not what I listen to but it did encapsulate that era perfectly. Can’t believe you didn’t know it offhand

Third Eye Blind-Semi-Charmed Life pretty much defines the essence of the 90’s.

I knew the band name, though I never listened to them... I didn't recognize the song name... it was about 30 seconds before they got to that oooh oooh part.. at that point I recognized it and immediately turned it off...

My tastes weren't very mainstream, but if I was going that route other than SLTS which was listed above... I'd have to say.. Oasis - Wonderwall/Champagne Supernova/Don't Look Back in Anger
