Who remembers Yaz?

Yazoo (known as Yaz in North America) were an English synth-pop duo consisting of former Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke (keyboards) and Alison Moyet (vocals).
On this day in 1982, Yaz released their debut single "Only You" featuring (a dance floor favorite) “Situation” as the b-side, taken from their first album, Upstairs at Eric's.
(2 songs on my list of Favorites)
Only You
Situation
Fun Fact- Only You was written by member Vince Clarke, while he was still with Depeche Mode, but recorded in 1982 after he formed Yazoo with Alison Moyet.
The duo formed in late 1981 after Clarke responded to an advertisement Moyet placed in a British music magazine, although the pair had known each other since their school days.
Despite their success, the duo split in May 1983.
Clarke went on to form Erasure, another successful and longer-lasting synth-pop duo, while Moyet had a highly successful solo career.
Another amazing 80’s band that even after their split went on to be very successful and influential to later bands.

"Don't Go" has one of the most recognizable keyboard intros from the 80s.

I was jamming to this at lunch. Girls played it all the time in highschool and you couldn't resist it. Depeche Mode Speak and Spell too.

Originally called Yazoo. Had to change when they found out an American band was using that name.

One of my favorite all time bands. Saw them at a small venue about 10 years ago and it was intense. Alison still had the same emotion in her voice and Vince is an all time great, of course.

it's insane the number of new wave bands that came out of England in the early 80's. Gotta be well over 400, here are 2 dozen. Pretty much all are still played on Sirius/XM First Wave channel. Hearting a song from this era brings me back to my high school years.

Incredible album. Winter Kills is a gem of a song buried deep on the B-side of the album.

Midnight was a pretty good tune as well.

Remember Upstairs at Eric’s being played at a freshman house party in 1982.

Remember? They're in my regular rotation.
Vince Clarke says that he doesn't regret leaving Depeche Mode. I betcha he does now. $

I love Yazoo and play them all the time when I do 80's synthpop sets. But (real talk here) with Hollywood being the way it was in the 1980's, Alison was 10-15 lbs away from being a massive star. Great personality, great voice. But in a time dominated by the music video, they were turned down because of superficial looks.
In today world, they would have been superstars.
