If Griff was on the outs months ago, why did they let him stay & make trades?

If it's true that Griff was as good as gone once he wanted to fire Willie, why allow him to stay? Why allow him to negotiate the Ingram deal.

Dumars wasn't doing anything he couldn't leave.

Seems weird to me allowing a guy you know you're going to fire to make a major trade.

My guess?

They didn’t want to pay two executives for the season. In the Stein article yesterday it sounded like Griffins contract expired, but it was classified as a firing

This probably all played out closer to the deadline when the move was presented to ownership.

As far as Ingram goes, there's really no choice. The damage was aleady done. He wanted a fresh start somewhere else by that point.

Ownership likely said something like "we're not going anywhere in standings so we'll evaluate in the off-season." It's ambiguous enough to think one could hang on to a job.

Griff would likely also want another job so even if he knew he'd be fired I think torpedoing the Pels with bad moves would not engender trust from potential future employees.

The trade deadline was February 6.

Bruh BI was a free agent at the end of the year, we had to trade him regardless. Dumars is already all about "getting to Zion" so how bad would it have gone if he "tried to get to BI" too and we end up letting him walk for nothing?

I doubt there were many other packages that offered more or gave us options. At that point Griff didn't have the deciding power to keep/ trade BI so it really didn't matter.

This is comparable to a retiring GM extending the best player and then someone asking why we let the old GM extend the best player instead of the new GM. Literally doesn't matter, the move itself was inevitable.

Curious that he literally sat out the rest of the year (played only 18 games this year). Toronto still rewarded him with a 3/120mil extension

That never dawned on Gayle or upper brass. Amateurs are in charge.
