Jake Madison on what they want Dumars role to be is more of a “high level overview”

He said on his pod today that what he’s been told is:
1) They want him on a high level overview, not in the day to day running of the team.
2) Build out a staff and allow them to run the day to day operations.
3) They could keep someone like Bryson Graham on staff, but he’s hearing things that there maybe a full house cleaning instead.
4) He will likely be bringing in his own people, has alot of connections throughout the league.
Still listening, will update more as I progress, but I must say what I’ve heard so far if he’s not involved in the day to day, it may not be as bad as originally expected.

Sounds like they want someone underneath him like Bryson Graham.
In other words, they want him to have the final call on drafting and trading, and they want him to manage Zion, but they want Dumars to find someone like Bryson to actually run the operations.

Bringing in his own people terrifies me

That’s typically how the POBO role is handled. We just had Griff who was basically the POBO/GM all rolled into one.

Right it’s not much different from Griff at all

I can think of one person who absolutely can’t get through to Zion if that’s a priority for this franchise.

It’s different if Dumars actually allows the GM to make decisions. Sure he’d have to sign off on them like in every organization, but we know it was never our GMs making moves during Griff’s time here.

Most teams only have either a president or a GM. It's usually rare to see a team have both. The top guy is the one who makes the call which in this case will be Dumars. So it's not going to be much different than what Griffin was doing. Maybe if we get lucky, less meddling.

If it's the pobo/gm role like griffin, frick no.
If it's the pobo - hire people and make sure they're working and actually doing their work. Players are doing what they're supposed to be doing. Trainers are doing what they should be doing. Scouts are where they need to be. Etc.
That's fine. My issue is - can't we find someone else? Anyone else?

There's a world in which this works out and Dumars is a competent overview and connections guy. Having a widely-respected person who did this role for the whole league and has bigtime leaguewide connections could really fill a major gap for the Pelicans org IF he's limited to that.
The reality is other NBA teams and people around the league see the Pelicans as an isolated anomaly. Gayle is on an island--doesn't have any friends in the NBA and they run stuff through football people. If Dumars is coming in just to bridge that gap and hires a good GM to actually run personnel, he could be a great hire.
That's me gaming out best-case scenario. If he's doing the Griffin role, frick everything.

Honestly hopefully he keeps Graham on as GM. Our drafting has been good with him at GM/assistant GM
Clean house above Graham, clean house on the training staff (keep the new injury recovery lady), clean house on the coaching staff, everyone else can stay

Joe can bring in his own people if he wants
Prince as Assistant Defensive Coach
Chauncey as Assistant offensive coach
Ben Wallace as the Zion mentor/handler
Rasheed as the PR and Media guy

I don’t care about job titles, who he brings in, etc. If the higher ups can’t see that Willie Green has to go it doesn’t fricking matter. He’s not a X’s and O’s guy, and the players hate him. What a fricking winning combo.

Dumars isn’t taking this job unless he gets to be puppet master, not an overseer. It’s not fun unless you make the personnel choices. I’m out.
