This had some pretty interesting tid bits in it. Oh what could’ve been.

quote:

Despite ongoing questions of their positional fit, Indiana has always valued Turner quite highly on the trade market, rebuffing overtures from Charlotte and even turning down the Pelicans’ No. 4 pick in the 19 draft” BRUH. Turner in 19 with Jrue, Lonzo, Ingram, Zion.

quote:

“The New Orleans Pelicans, while awaiting Zion Williamson’s season debut, are still expected to be buyers ahead of the trade deadline, with an eye toward competing for the play-in tournament. Third-year forward Jaxson Hayes, the No. 8 pick in the 2019 NBA draft, is now available”

Was just coming to start this. With a much better thread title :p

Jax being available really isn’t a surprise. Guys like him rarely ever pan out for the team that drafted them.

I really don’t like the thought of being buyers. I’d rather hold onto assets, let this roster play out, and let the next POBO get to make those decisions.

Unless we are talking about minor margin trades like Sato, Temple, Jax etc for other parts.

Orlando and Sacramento are the best spots.

Griffin isn’t getting fired. Zion will play 15-20 games and the Pelicans will look good, especially if they add some more legit players.

We will get pennies on the dollar for Jaxson, but I am ready for him and NAW to be anywhere else but here.

You need to swap him for a similarly distressed property. Marvin Bagley is an obvious name. Someone said Killian Hayes has been a disappointment in Detroit. Looking at his stats he could use some time with Fred Vinson.

LOL my bad dude.

I’m totally cool with being buyers this year AS LONG AS it’s a long term piece. If it’s some half arse attempt for a short term patch, that’s a horrible idea.

I also thought the nugget about Turner was very interesting. Imagine him in 19 instead of Favors.
Which just goes to show all those “GO GET THIS GUY” comments were pretty hilarious looking back.
That tells me Griffin wanted to use 4 to get someone more established but it didn’t pan out, so they traded back.

Also… Jrue, Lonzo, Ingram, Zion, and Turner in 19 would have been killer.

I keep asking this. How does the trade exception work?

What do we have to give up to use it?

We have to fill the hole at PF and we need another guard. Someone has to take shots from Graham and NAW.

I'm usually pretty negative. But with everything going on, we are not that far off from making the play in. If we aren't top 4 in the draft guaranteed, I'd rather make a run and be competitive. Need at least two contributors to get it done..

I don’t 100% understand it, but, I don’t necessarily think you have to “give up” something. I think it just gives you way more extra wiggle room in matching salaries in a potential trade.

Trying to trade for a guy making 30. Trade someone with 13 and use the 17 exception? My guess

I lean more this way right now, but, it depends on where we stand once Zion actually starts playing. I do want him to play down the stretch though at some point.

That was reported and discussed at the time. It's interesting, but it's not new.

The trade exception is a certain amount, basically a credit from a previous trade where you didn't send out as much salary as you were allowed to.

You can take a player into that exception as long as the player's entire salary fits. Trade exceptions cannot be bundled with other exceptions or players. So our $17 million trade exception can't bring back Buddy and his $24 million salary even if you added another player.

All trades require both sides to send something, at least cash, draft rights to a euro that's never coming, fake 2nds. So if a team just wanted to salary dump you have to send something back.

If a team had a back up PF you like that makes $17 or less then you could send them 2nds and cash and nothing else to make the trade happen.

I don't think you can combine it with anybody else. So we can take a guy making less than 18M. I just don't know what all you have to give up. I'm thinking just picks, but I'm not sure..

To think how much different this team would be if that trade would have happened

So just hypothetically, the Rockets want to dump Wood. We can take his salary with the exception. We just have to send them conditional 2nds? Would that work?

Not saying they would go for that. Just asking if the technical aspects match up..

If his salary fits and that's all they want in return, yes.

We should offer NAW and Jaxson Hayes for Garland.

Was this already known? I cant remember talking about knowing for sure if we offered that. That was a strong offer.

Indiana had a decent roster and I guess figured they could make a run with what they had. I always thought they under achieved the past few years. In 2019 they had Turner, Brogdon, TJ Warren, Oladipo (injured?) and Sabonis. Thats some pretty good talent.

I still say the best destination for NAW is Toronto with Nurse. They probably feel like they could make him a positive contributor. Doubt they'd give up much to get him though. No one is giving a first for NAW. If Grayson Allen could only fetch 2 2nds, then NAW is probably pretty worthless.
I don't know what we are trying to do with him, but it isn't working. He's the chuckiest chucker in the NBA right now, still averaging more FGA than points, and on top of that is has one of the lowest rates at which he shoots FT's per FG's in the NBA.

I'm not sure what Jaxson's value is, but I"m sure someone would take a flyer on him to get rid of a long term contract. I'd take Bertans back if we got a 1st as well. Earliest Washington can trade is '25 1st. I doubt anyone would give a late 1st to get Jaxson, but they'd probably swap a disappointing rookie contract guy for him, like Bagley, or somewhere to unload a long term contract and save some salary/tax money, like the Clippers with Kennard.

I don't want to give up on NAW. I see the next Clarkson when I watch him. He needs to be reigned in and given a role. I want him as our 6th man. I'd move Graham before I move him..
