The NBA is looking to package all of its rights to one digital platform

Quotes from an interview with Bill Koenig, the NBA's president of global content and media distribution make it sound like they are aiming to bundle all the rights, National, Local, and International for one digital platform like Apple, Amazon, Google.

quote:

Don’t be surprised if a digital company winds up with one of the main packages.

...“The definition of reach is changing,” Koenig said. “There’s a lot of opportunity that change will bring.”

That change could go as far as using linear TV to supplement digital packages, Koenig suggested.

“Historically, we thought of a simulcast as something that aired on linear television and then maybe had another telecast or also re-aired the simulcast on digital,” he said. “We’re going to probably flip it around where you’ll see the games — because of personalization and other things — be based on a digital distribution with simulcast opportunities on linear.”

Another way the NBA will pitch digital companies is with the sheer volume of its live events. Koenig said it has enough live programming for about 320 nights per year when the WNBA is included.

Rather than risking production budgets on entertainment shows that may — or may not — become hits, digital companies can invest in sports programming that already has proved itself.

“They’re striving to have consistent hit programming throughout as many months as possible to avoid churn,” he said.

There's more detail in the article, including why Apple/Amazon/Google may be prime targets, but this is the quote that makes me think they are hoping to sell all of the primary rights to one company.

quote:

Koenig explained: “The day will come where you’ll come to the NBA app, and you’ll click on the Wizards-Celtics game; and if you’re in Washington — and if you’re an authenticated subscriber to Monumental — you’ll go straight into that game.

Aside from the obvious question of why you'd use league pass if you could just watch the game on Netflix, Monumental is clearly a codename for whatever comes next. It seems like a telling code name considering the context provided by the other quotes of having a proven global hit product aimed at companies spending Billions trying to find their next global hit.

Keep in mind, Turner and ESPN get first negotiating rights starting in March, so this could just be posturing, but it really seems like the plan and fits how streaming platforms want to do business.

From the Pels fan perspective, they got the rights back from Bally's next year for a reason. If negotiations start in March and they can lock Monumental up this summer, I bet we could see the local games switch to the new streaming partner next season.

This would be amazing.

If Turner is serious about getting into sports they should go all in on getting the NBA rights and up their Max package to $30 a month and offer every team on it along with all their other content.

They could corner the market and most people already have max and would just need to pay the upgrade fee.

I mean I guess, but at what point do we lose the plot with chord cutting?

Like when do we cross the threshold of saying having a cable package was more convenient and cheaper than having to pay for one service to watch a tv show, another service to watch a movie and another service to watch a basketball game?

The simplicity of only getting to chose from a local cable monopoly is gone. But it is absolutely cheaper.

Entertainment has already been decoupled from linear TV. If you look at ad tier pricing, for under $50 you can get more entertainment shows than you got 15-20 years ago with all of the cable channels for $150+

We are watching Sports starting to decouple from linear TV. We don't know what it looks like yet, but let's say you had to pay another $40-$50 to get all of the sports, that's still $100 or less for streaming vs. $150 or more for what we used to get from cable, and you get everything including all of the back seasons on demand. I guarantee most of us in 2005 would have dropped cable and signed up for this new fangled set of services with more content at 1/2-2/3 the price that we could watch wherever we were, not just at home.

To be clear, I’m saying this would be amazing assuming we would be getting access to every teams games. With current cable you only get your local team and you have to pay $30 a month for league pass if you want to watch other teams games.

With a central company handling all rights they could do it for cheaper and sell advertising rights and probably even get that cost down to $20 a month for consumers, while still offering everything else on their platform.

If I had to pick a favorite, I think it’s gonna be Apple. They are flush with cash and looking to grow their content.

It's cheaper now, but as things continue to splinter, I'm not sure it will be.

No way, "all of the sports" will be $40-50, you see what Sunday Ticket went for in its first year with YouTubeTV?

I don't think you can pick a favorite. ESPN wants to become a stand alone service. Amazon has been trying to get into sports for a few years. Max didn't just add a sports tier, it's branded with Bleacher Report, so they no doubt want to attach sports news programming to it. And then there is Apple who just increased their subscription price by over 40%.

That is a lot of companies that spend a lot of money on content that all want the same thing. The thing that concerns me a little, is the more a company pays for the rights, the more they have to charge the consumer. So while this competition may be great for the Pels' salary cap, I hope it doesn't get too out of control.

No I hadn't and that's crazy. That is kind of what I'm worried about with so many bidders on the NBA.

Hope they fix the menu, because the Max app is borderline unusable as is.

No, Monumental Sports Network is the name of the DC-area RSN.

Monumental Sports Network

What he's saying is like saying, "If you're in New Orleans and a Ballys subscriber."

And that's why this message board exists.

Everything else fits though, it does look like they are trying to bundle everything in one package. I know Netflix doesn't even look at most shows if they can't get global rights too.

The Suns are one of the few teams who’ve broken away from their RSN license with their games broadcast on a local cable station. 11 games in, that station is already being pulled off of youtube tv due to a retransmission fee dispute.

Anyone thinking all these teams and the NBA having more control over their TV rights will make things cheaper for the consumer haven’t been reading the tea leaves.
