BR tidbits

- Doesn’t like the pick bc saints didn’t take Sanders
2. Not a LT, penning not NFL OL caliber player and Fuaga shouldn’t be a RT

BR is about as valid as Doomiss decision making.

I think it's a good pick. Two good tackles for the future, Penning could end up being an above average guard, we had a big hole at Guard. I trust myself more than BR, oh and everyone passed on Shedeur

Wonder if they'll change the grade if we draft Sanders at 40... what a worthless rag

They had him ranked 33rd on their big board. So taking a second round talent in the top 10 gets you an F.

Whose to know anyone picked above him will pan out? Total crapshoot.

That grade may be a compliment
quote:

Penning’s addition makes up for Terron Armstead’s loss in free agency. Armstead became one of the league’s best blockers when available. But he never played a full season with New Orleans, whereas Penning started every game over the last three seasons. He’ll take over left tackle and complete a Saints offensive front that will likely be a premier unit for years.

Grade: B+

Just for some comparisons.

T'Athletic

quote:

9. New Orleans Saints: Kelvin Banks Jr., G/OT, Texas
New Orleans has thrown numerous resources at its offensive line, spending first-round picks there in 2020, 2022, 2024 and now 2025. That spot on the field is always important, but this team also could use some defensive backs to shore up what was the NFL’s 27th-ranked defense a season ago.

Banks can become a stalwart (and the grade below isn’t about him specifically), but it’s arguable whether spending another key asset on the offensive line was the best move. Banks was this class’ 26th-ranked prospect, according to The Athletic’s Dane Brugler. He started every game of his college career at left tackle and won both the Lombardi Trophy and Outland Trophy after the 2024 season.

There is much debate over whether Banks’ skill set works best at tackle or guard, and that will be ongoing.

Grade: C

PFF

quote:

9) New Orleans Saints: T Kelvin Banks Jr., Texas
Pick Grade: Above Average

The Saints had been linked to quarterbacks throughout the pre-draft process, but the prudent approach was always to build up the offensive infrastructure to set up their future quarterback for success. Banks allowed the lowest pressure rate (2.1%) of any left tackle in the Power Four over the past two seasons, and did so on more pass-blocking snaps than any other player. He should help keep the pockets cleaner in New Orleans.

I’m not about to question KM or Nuss on their choice of a tackle. They’ve had the best OL in the league and know the importance of building it up long term.

Could we have traded back a few spots and still taken him, yeah maybe but not sure anyone was even interested in trading up there.

I don't know if Moore has ever been with an OT as physically limited as Banks, though, outside of one failure of a year with the Chargers.

Tyron Smith had 36 3/8" arms

Mailata has 35 1/2" arms

Banks also isn't close to the athlete that Slater was for the Chargers

I'm not against the pick, it was fine, but now we have 2 physically-limited OTs who may be better guards. That is likely limiting in our pass pro sets.

I will say this. Fuaga coming out had an insane zone-run blocking grade, and Banks is much better at zone blocking than man-gap blocking (per PFF). A zone-based run scheme can make up for physical limitations.

I have to assume we're going HEAVY on zone blocking moving forward with our guys on the OL.

I like it. They’re usually completely wrong so this gives me hope that Banks may be the next Willie Road.

I don't know what the balance between RAS and actual results in college is, but penning was 9.96 RAS. Obviously raw tools and physical traits aren't the only factor.

I don't hate the pick, but I thought there were better players available at #9 the way things fell, and the Saints basically need everything.

I remember one year they kept giving us a D on every pick because they thought we should draft this OLB from Stanford the year we switched to a 3/4. We ended up signing the guy as a UDFA and they thought he was a third round pick

“Physically limited” compared to a guy with 98 percentile arm length and one of the top RAS OTs ever

Follow the whole post.

I said Moore has only had 1 OT who lacked prime physical traits in his career, and it was Slater. Slater was in the same "projects better at G (HOF level projection) but can play OT" analysis as Fuaga/Banks. He makes it work at LT at an All-Pro level due to his insane athleticism. The RAS was meant to show that, and compare his athleticism to Banks (big drop off).

Slater's play on the field is why he was such a top prospect, not his RAS/athleticism. His RAS/athleticism is why he can make it work at an elite level at LT, though. Penning never was a top prospect and his play was always suspect
