Before I write down these stats, let me emphasize that this is pure "food for thought" and just some interesting stats that may give a better perspective of what kind of player the New Orleans Saints have on their team. Deuce McAllister was the best Saints running back in its history, and what he has done in his 8 seasons should be emulated by all future running backs. He's the all-time Saints scoring leader, and his loyalty and passion for the game was always visible and never questioned. We currently have a player who is contributing almost as much as Deuce did in his first 47 games, yet "fans" are asking for a trade/release/etc. The way I see it, if you put on that fleur-de-lis helmet and contribute to this team winning games, you are alright in my book.

Deuce McAllister

G GS Att Yds Avg TD Rec Yds Avg TD FUM Lost

47 35 692 3120 4.5 22 131 1034 7.8 4 11 7

Reggie Bush

G GS Att Yds Avg TD Rec Yds Avg TD FUM Lost

47 33 473 1827 3.9 17 242 1806 7.5 9 16 9

-Deuce and Reggie both had 26 TDs on the ground and in the air, but Reggie tacked on 4 more TDs by punt return for a total of 30.

-I'm actually surprised to see Deuce's rec avg to be higher than Reggie's.

Take from this what you will.

Deuce did not see much playing time in his first year, but he was in all 16 games and started 4.

#2 draft pick vs. #23 draft pick is what leads to fans wanting more from Reggie.

I'm personally very pleased with his play of late, and hope Payton can continue to use him well.

Impressed with any poster who does some thinking on their own. Whoa, dude better watch that around here. Good numbers for perspective even with the asterisk for Deuce's first year.

I think most everyone can admit Reggie will never be Adrian Petersen. He can be Reggie though. He has a role and some distinct talents that add positively to the team. is he paid too much for what he does? Yup. The way his season and the team is playing out I'm expecting a amicable renegotiation next year. I think they will still pay him more than any other team would (even if it is half of his current contract). Who wants to leave a Super Bowl team anyway?

Since 2006 (the year we drafted Reggie), the Saints have played in 57 regular season games, but last Sunday was the 47th game Reggie has played in. The stats I provided accounts for the games both players missed due to injury.

You take in to account his punt returns for TDs but not his fumbles on punt returns.

I did. (it's included in the stats. sorry about the formatting, but this word editor is very archaic.) Reggie has a total of 16 fumbles through 47 games, losing 9 of those. 12 fumbles rushing, 1 receiving, and 3 on punt returns.

Every stat page that I've seen only lists total fumbles, not fumbles on punts vs. rushing or receiving.

Bush has 16 through 47 games (I'm not going to try to dig up how many were lost, because recovery of a fumble is pretty random. As far as I care, all fumbles count the same, whether you lose it or not).

Deuce had 11.

Half of Reggies fumbles came in 2007; 6 of Deuce's 11 came in 2003 (4 came in 2002). I think that's interesting because both had a spike in one season, and then protected the ball much better other than the one bad year.

Didn't catch that one. Nice observation.

Excellent post and nice follow-up on the fumble thing. I think that the coaching staff has been modifying Reggie's role over the course of this season and if he continues with the Saints (and I hope he does), his numbers will trend higher.

I like Reggie's attitude this year. Especially in the last few games, you can see him trying to gain yards and lowering his shoulder to get positive yards. Seeing him do this makes me think he has made a turn for the better. Gotta love number 25 for his playmaking ability.

That crap won't be tolerated around here.

Very nice post and a great observation on all points.
