Two of the biggest offseason pickups were Godchaux and Reid. A 0 Tech NT and a Safety that plays downhill and in the box a lot. Both help tremendously in run support.

The 2 saints 3rd round picks? A guy that played a ton of 1 Tech DT and a downhill Safety that plays in the box a lot and helps in run support.

While Broughton likely won’t play the exact same role as Godchaux, will play more 3/4 End and rush the passer more…between the 4 players there’s a significant level of duplication.

Does anyone else find that kinda interesting? Seems to me they really really believe they have to get the run D corrected.

Run D has fallen off a cliff the last couple of years. You can never have enough good D linemen. I'd still like to see an edge guy picked up. I think as far as traditional Dline, it's probably the strongest position on our team now. Safety looks a lot better also. Heck, Howden didn't even look bad last year. CB, WR, G are our biggest needs in my opinion.

I don’t think they see Broughton as a NT. He projects more as a 3 tech or pass rush specialist at DT, and probably DE on 3 man fronts. I noticed he’s lined up as DE out of 3 man fronts in a lot of his highlights.

I still wouldn’t be surprised if they pick a developmental NT later in the draft, to backup Godchaux. Someone like Cam Jackson from Florida.

I’m curious if last year’s pick Boyd can develop into that role.

It is interesting, though we’ll see where they envision Broughton.

Kind of signals that Reid and Godchaux are stop gaps, which is fine. You can move on from both after 2026.

Reid and Godchaux are no spring chickens.

That would make sense, since both are on shorter term deals.

Sanker started to play deep more and more.

I can see them using him as the joker role and hopefully move him back to FS when tm is gone

I appreciate someone posting about fit, positional value, and how this can make the team better or worse. Tired of whiny posts about the QB position.

Sanker is more like Mathieu than Reid, and that's the role he will be worked into. More slot coverage and box, while Reid will play more of a mid to deep coverage role (although all 3 will be mixed around to confuse offenses).

Broughton projects more to 3-4 DE than NT, and is more of a Jordan replacement than Godchaux.

I think this signals more that Mathieu and Jordan are likely gone after this year than anything to do with Reid and Godchaux (especially since you want your NT more around 330 lbs, like Godchaux is, than the 305 to 310 range Broughton has been in recently).

That's not to say they can't or won't eventually be worked into those other roles, but I think you are looking at the wrong players they are meant to replace.

The LB we just took also signals that we are trying to replace Davis soon since they are very similar players. That's a tall order though, so we'll see what he can do.
