This draft has me excited about the Saints

Not necessarily about the players, but how we have approached the offseason.
We made some good solid signings with Reid and Godchaux and not big splash signings.
We’d have not traded up once, but let the draft come to us! Let me say that again…we haven’t burned picks by trading up.
All the picks and signings are up the middle of the field players. OL, DL, S, QB.
If we take a step back and look at the forest instead of looking at each individual tree, you can see we are retooling and building a team instead of flashy signings with a win now approach.
I love the Banks, Broughton and Sanker picks. Low floor, high upside picks that aren’t “potential” or “gamble” guys like Davenport or Turner or Penning. These are mature guys who have been in big time programs that can add value to the team.
While I don’t love the Shough pick and had other preferences, I’m willing to let our offensive minded head coach pick his guy and see how it works out.
We still need a WR, CB and can upgrade at TE and need another RB, but I haven’t been this excited about the direction of the Saints in several years now. It won’t be quick, but I like how we are building.
Big picture looks good!

Wtf you can’t be positive on this board

could not agree more. they've stayed put and let the draft come to them. while i still do not think they should have drafted a qb this year, they can still draft another next year. you have to roll the dice as many times as you can until you hit there.
not a flashy draft, and i hope they get a rb or wr today, but i'm pretty happy all things considered.

Great point!

Over-drafting an elderly QB signals they believe they can win now.

I think you have this backwards. High floor low ceiling guys unlike the low floor high ceiling guys like Davenport/Turner/Penning.

Godchaux
Very underrated signing imo. Very much needed for a 3-4 front.

Elderly lol
Nice choice of words.

Staley doesn't run a traditional/2-gap 3-4 front.
I don't know how many times this has to be repeated on here

When Staley was with the Chargers he hand-picked a 310 lb guy as his primary DI, not a 330lb+ 2-gapper.

Irrelevant, he’s a good pick for this defense. Sure, even if we stayed with a 4-3 we still need a run stopper. Whether it’s a 1 or 1.5 or 2 gap front he’ll be good there

Good post, I agree.
The outcry about Shough has more to do with narratives people have (wanting Shadeur or Nuss next year) more so than the actual player. We haven’t had a good 2nd round pick since McCoy, and the outcry for those picks wasn’t 1/100th of this.

And like clockwork here comes the negative post

I don’t believe that at all. If Shough had lit the ACC on fire as a 25 year old, it would be more palatable for some.
I believe the majority would have a positive view of this draft had we gone say Mason Taylor, Will Johnson, or one of the edges at 40

My 2 biggest issues with Shough are
1. He's old as frick
2. He wasn't that good in college.

Correct.
If Shough did what McCord, another ACC QB, did, this would be much more palatable.

Exactly

I think you mean high floor, low upside. None of these guys will be All Pro but they all will be solid.
Shough on the other hand is a home run swing. To get a starter QB in the mold of Justin Herbert at 40 is potentially a major steal. Risky though.
I like the balance between solid and risky so far. Would like to see an athletic upside pick or two in day three.

i wish we would have gone in a different direction than shough, but we'll see what ckm can do and what he can see in qbs. i don't think it mattered who we picked at qb after ward went 1st overall because rattler probably beats them all in camp. not saying we shouldn't draft one next year too. rattler had his high and low points in a nightmare situation, but that dude looked more than comfortable running an nfl offense. haener isn't an nfl level qb so i guess ckm had to grab someone.

Sounds more like you are the one with the narrative

The fact that he didn’t is itself pretty alarming

It boggles the mind how he's being hyped without producing any great seasons in college over 7 years

My guess is that Brohm's offense is somewhat "pro style" and Moore is impatient and wants a QB and the combo of experience in a "pro style" offense and the tools made them ignore his lack of production almost entirely.
If that's true, it's somewhat scary to think about Moore over time. Continuation of the "win now" mentality is going to hurt us in the long run.

You’re talking about one pick. Get off his d!ck and talk about the activities overall. Thats what this thread is about.
