Another bad decision by the Saints staff.

We couldn’t afford to keep Hendrickson. Simple as that.
While I hate that we don’t have a pass rush, and Mathieu and Howden are serviceable, I think letting Von Bell leave was one of our worst losses to FA. He’s a super solid player you could build around for a long time.

If they wanted to keep him they could've made it work.
They obviously didn't look at him as a starter.
Are you telling me that the saints wouldn't have figured out a way to keep Hendrickson if they knew he would be this? Yeah right.

Hindsight is a bitch, but the decision was to keep davenport, Jordan, and Williams long term - paying Hendrickson meant either losing davenport or Williams. I don't think they anticipated Williams not wanting to stay, and if they did I imagine they'd have signed Hendrickson instead.
2020
Hendrickson had 13.5 sacks in 15 games, being a 3rd down specialist. He also had injury concerns and was piss poor vs run the run.
Jordan still had an above average season 7.5 sacks.
2022 all 3 had relatively good seasons and Williams played like a top 5 safety.

It was more about Williams than Davenport or Jordan IMO. Saints paid Peat and went all in on thinking they would re-sign Williams. That made it impossible to sign Bell or Hendrickson. Hendrickson had a huge year and got a big contract from Cincy we couldn’t match. Simple as that.

I said at the time he should have been tagged. Hardest thing to find outside of qb is a pass rusher. He was leading the nfl his last year at one point. You don’t let that walk for nothing. U tag him and trade for high picks or keep him. Exactly what i said 4 years ago….
That’s a stupid take. No one builds a defense around safety. Vonn Bell is a solid player but he overpriced himself. We tried to the-sign him. But he wasn’t a huge loss. Marcus Williams I think was a bigger loss.

I don’t necessarily disagree. But IIRC, the cap went down that year and the Saints couldn’t afford to pay Hendrickson the $15M the tag would have cost, and the Bengals offered him $20M+. We were over the cap with Brees’ carried over money and MT13s contract. We couldn’t tag anyone that year.

As much as Williams killed us on some dumb plays to end games, he was the better athlete. He was always going to be more expensive though. I think Bell is a leader on defense that you can build a secondary around. And at a better price than Williams. Just my opinion.

The cap isn’t real!!!
They could have kept Trey. They screwed up and thought he wasn’t a player to keep and pay. And signed other players instead.

We didn't keep Williams long term, either

I don’t think any of this is it. Our fans are awful and forget that he spent 3 of the first 4 years on IR. The guy could always play but was never healthy. Unfortunately neither could Davenport so they chose Davenport. Jusy played out Trey ended up staying healthy after and we know the history. I honestly don’t blame them for making the call they did. Losing Williams and bell following sucked though. People also forget we had 20 mill in a player who never played for the entire length of his contract in Michael Thomas during this time period.

if they knew
That could apply to the 102 times he was passed over before being drafted.
If the 49ers knew trey lance sucked they wouldn't have wasted a high pick on him, if the saints knew Michael Thomas would go into diva mode they wouldn't have given him that contract, if tampa bay knew bret farve was going to be who he became they would yave kept him .
None of these teams have the crystal balls some on this board have

Hendrickson did not play every game of any season in NOLA. He appeared in 45 of 64 regular season games primarily due to injury. He had 20 sacks in those 45 games. He was a gamble to sign at that point. Hindsight is a great thing but unavailable at the times you need it.
