Hello all, back in the car market for the wife and wondering about experiences in the Equinox. Been reading up on them, but wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this vehicle
Reliability? Pros/cons
Thanks!

Heard nothing but trouble with the two that friends own. Always in the shop for them

Avoid. Get a rav4 or crv

Low marks for Owner satisfaction and low marks for reliability.
CRV or a RAV 4, they’ll cost a little more, but dependability and satisfaction are worth it. I’d rather that with a wife and kids in it.

My wife has a 4.5 year old CRV and it has been a really great car. I’d get one again in a heartbeat.

First, it is a redesign by a manufacturer not know for steller first year reliability. That alone is enough of a redflag to leave it off the list.
The Equinox through every iteration has always been in the bottom half of the class both in reliability and function.
If you don't want to feel the need to start "Mechanics of the OT... threads buy the Forester or RAV4 with the CX-5 and CR-V in the second tier.

As for the Forester, I also like. I’m not much on the CX-5, but that’s just me.

Well, what’s disappointing is the CV transmission in the fwd vehicles, awd has the 8sp transmission. Our dealer group(8 stores) has Chevy, Buick, GMC, Ford, Lincoln, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, & Toyota and the Equinox is as capable as any model that we have, brand notwithstanding…

CRV has a CVT. And a turbocharged engine.
I'd go for a Mazda CX5 or CX50 (not the turbo variants). That 2.5 is super reliable and they have "ancient" 6 speed autos.

I have a 2018 Equinox and it's fine. Boring car but reliable.

I’ve had two. Current one is a 2023 and I beat the shite out of them. They are base model company cars but haven’t spent a second in the shop. Disclaimer, we swap out of them around 75K miles.

Boss has one for company car. Lost of driving in town. Don't think he's ever had a problem.

Go out and test drive it and good to see you doing your own research. If we relied on anyone from the OT on car advise, we'd all be driving Toyotas.
My mother has a 2016 GMC Terrain, basically the same vehicle, never had any issues with it.

That’s pretty much all we buy for company cars now. Get them a year or two old with low miles and keep them for about 4-5 years and trade them in before 100k miles. They’re cheap and reliable for what we use them for. I’ve been driving a 2017 for two years with no issues. I think we have 7 of them now.
If it was a personal car and long term I’d get a Toyota instead but if you trade in every 5 years it will be fine.

For a little bit more, step up to a Traverse. Much more solid vehicle. 2¢

Go to a book store, pick up a Consumer Reports New Car Magazine. Tons of information. It will help you get a little more information.
If in BTR, I have friends and relatives that own about a dozen dealerships. Let me know if you need more help.

Had a 2014 and traded it in at 130,000 never a problem. Regular oil changes and services. Only reason we got rid of it was the clearcoat started failing. Have a 2020 AWD and no problems. Regular maintenance is the key.

This is one of the options in my company’s car program. I’ve driven 2 for about 3 years and they fricking suck. Everyone I know who had one hates them and tries to get out as soon as possible. I’d rather look like a lesbian while driving an Outback than drive an Equinox again

Been researching on them through consumer reports online, but I like to be thorough by getting personal experiences as well.
Thank you!

I’ve had three different CRV vehicles from 2004-2024. They were great vehicles. The last one I was in, while great, still felt like I was low to the ground. It was time for a change. I got a 2025 Equinox RS. It has been great so far. The ride is smooth, I sit higher up, and I have more room all while not feeling I’m in a tank. I’ve not had any problems since I made the purchase in December. I know it’s early but the experience has been great. I know of other people who went the Equinox route and they have no regrets.
