did you know about the crash?
yes, they went down right in front of us, very sickening to watch, you can hear us discussing that with the tower on the transcript, in this case there was no point in not telling everyone what had happened, or trying to soften the announcement with using "kinder, gentler" words

I was a Soph. in HS and remember it well. I lived behind Delta Playground and was visiting friends who lived on N. Sibley which was 5-6 blocks from the crash site. Decided to ride our bicycles within visible range of the debris field and the smell of burning / burnt fuel is what I still remember 4 decades later. Still to this day, several lots with destroyed houses have never been rebuilt … just a vacant empty lot.
A girl who was a Sr. at my HS lost both her parents, who left behind 4 children ages 12 to 20. Jury awarded each child close to $3M. Pan Am appealed this monetary decision, and the judge ruled each child would receive approximately $800,000. Granted this was in 1986, but I still thought it was chickenshite since these kids lost their mother and father at a very young age.

Remember this well. Summer before my 7th grade year. A lady from Ponchatoula was on that flight, she was a 8th grade teacher at St.Joseph's Catholic School here. She was headed to Las Vegas on vacation. Seem like everyone knows some that was effected this.

Very good odds I was with you that day. I grew up on N Cumberland and also rode my bike over shortly after the crash. Same here. I can smell the burning fuel till this day.

I lived on Beron & Balter , 1 block from Green Park Elementary. My friends went to OLDP and Rummel, and would be in their early 50’s. We all played sports at Delta & Lynn Park Country Club.

I was 13 at the time. Also played sports at Delta. Went to Harris and EJ

Delta 191. That was the crash that brought about onboard wind shear detection. Big plus for airline safety.
It took something happening in Texas to bring about a change. New Orleans upstaged again.

Same. Spent a lot of time with her while she dated a friend of mine. Very cool, down to earth girl. Didn't know her story until I saw the Facebook post on the anniversary several months after we had met.

I was 1 month old at the time and we lived a few blocks away. My dad said that he was wanting to move away from Kenner and that was the last straw.

One of those who died on the ground that day was little Lisa Baye. She was 7 years old. I met her father, John Baye, through a mutual friend a few years after the plane crash. This man is a modern-day Job. His wife ended up divorcing him, which is not at all uncommon among couples who have lost a child, their middle child died from a drug overdose at age 32, and their oldest, and last remaining child died last year at age 51. I've never known anyone who went through more in this life

Man it only got 150 feet off the ground max and still everyone died? That's crazy

There was a guy here in Baton Rouge who didn't get on the flight at the last minute to go to a family member's funeral in Vegas. He lost his ENTIRE family.. Grandparents, parents aunts uncles, brothers and sisters. I heard he just left town for a very long period because he couldn't handle the enormity of burying everyone. Not sure of all the details but that is the gyst if it.
Must been the brother of my one of my secretaries - a young, bright woman from Port Allen, maybe Addis, as I recall. She (they) lost 6 or 8 close family members as you mentioned that were on that flight traveling to the funeral. Amazingly she was back at work within a week and functioned as though nothing happened.

Work was probably a distraction.

I remember it well.
I knew three families on Fairway, two a block away and one whose house was so close to disaster that the wing made a rut in the yard on the side of the house, and his father was home. I was at Godfather's Pizza on Veterans Blvd. applying for a job (and got hired). When the rain stopped I went outside and could smell the smoke. The news helicopter was hovering over the parking lot where I was. Completely bizarre day.

According to my ex-wife (women are always right)(no pics) I am responsible for that tragic crash. Her parents and her aunt and uncle were on that flight.

150 feet is a lot. Only sounds low compared to cruising altitude.

yep, willing to jump off a 150' cliff just because it's not that high? then add in the inertia, jet fuel, fire, metal, what you hit on the ground, etc.

How long did you feel like the OT cliche "Wow, that could have been me."
If you were watching it did you see the plane make a sudden shift or was it just gradually descending?
