The HMS Barham was a Queen Elizabeth class battleship, commissioned in 1910. She saw action in WWI at the Battle of Jutland. But it’s not her service in WWI that the Barham is remembered for. She was sent to the Mediterranean shortly before the start of WWII. There she took part in the attack on the French fleet at Dakar and escort duty to convoys bound for Malta. On this day 80 years ago the Barham met her fate when she was sunk by the German u-boat U-331 off thee coast of Egypt. As she sank she began to capsize. Just as she rolled over on her side, one of her magazines exploded tearing the ship apart taking 826 of her crew to a watery grave. What makes the sinking of HMS Barham so memorable was it was all recorded on film and became one of the most iconic scenes of the war.

The Siege of Malta was one of the most underrated actions of the North Africa campaign. Had the Germans managed to capture the island, Rommel and his Afrika Korps might have had an easier time of it. However, the British stubbornly held onto the island and made it that much harder to supply German and Italian forces in Libya and Egypt.

It really is. What made it so bad is U-331 attacked from virtually point blank range. She put three torpedoes in HMS Barham’s side. From the time of the torpedo hits to the HMS Barham capsizing and exploding, only about four minutes passed. Most of the crew never had a chance.

Those were men on the side of the ship when the magazine blew.

It really was a close run thing with Malta. They were hanging on by a thread for a while. At one point the air defense of the island consisted of three obsolete biplane Gloster Gladiators nicknamed “Faith”, “Hope, & “Charity”.

Yes, I do believe so. But most of the crew was still inside the ship. The ship capsized so rapidly they never had a chance to get on deck.

This video was not shown for years because they didn’t want to demoralize the British people during the war.

Germany was never going to be able to ferry/fly enough supplies to Africa, especially after Patton landed. They shoukd have never been in Africa
