Can you guess the 20 states where the ban does not exist without using Google?
1.Alabama(fightin tigers)
2.Rhode Island(TrueTiger)

A research study done over seven years by a data scientist at Columbia University shows that it is okay to marry your first cousin as long as your children do not marry their first cousins, According To Popular Science
quote:
4 to 7 percent of the children from first cousins are likely to have birth defects. In comparison, 3 to 4 percent of the children with distantly related parents are likely to have defects.
quote:
The study also discovered that from 1650 to 1850, the average person was a fourth cousin to their spouse. In 1950, the average person was the seventh cousin to their spouse. The research believes today, humans are 10th to 12th cousins away from each other.

Many states began to ban cousin marriages after the Civil War. In 2018, 24 states have continued the cousin marriage ban but there are still at least 20 states where the ban does not exist.

Rhode Island must be one, because everyone there is related anyway.

On a serious note, i jave been doing ancestry and i have people that came over in the late 1600s that were all related and then cousins and second cousins were getting married. Didnt screw my family up too bad, i guess.

It's a great day today for states beginning with "A."

It's 2018. If you can't go outside of the family to find a romantic partner then please do society a favor and do not procreate.

This is somewhat supported by pedegree breeding with cattle. They say a bull can breed his off spring (daughter) but not the granddaughter. When it works as a way of breeding the good traits into cattle it’s called inline breeding. When it doesn’t it changes to being inbred.

Some states have exceptions. In Utah, I think, you can marry a first cousin so long as you’re both 60 or older. Something to that effect.
