The "man" accused of killing a Houston Sheriff's Deputy in cold blood has been released on a $1.0m, bond.

The HCDO FOP 39 is outraged and appalled that Dremone Francis, a man charged with Capital Murder in the death of Deputy Fernando Esqueda, has been given bond. Bond was set by Judge Hilary Unger of the 248th District Court. This man is now free out on bond. This man has a criminal history of breaking parole conditions and now he has been let go on bond after being charged with Capital Murder.

killing a human being is bad in itself, I've never understood why cops think it's a super crime if a cop is killed

You mean you don't understand it as a concept or you don't understand why they would feel that way?

Texas cities are basically California cities at this point

neither, I guess, cops seem to think they're some protected class of whatever that makes it particularly heinous if one of them gets killed, what about a regular citizen? is that just tough titty?

How does someone like that come up with a million dollars?

I will acknowledge that what I'm about to describe is somewhat pie in the sky and doesn't really reflect the reality of most police forces. But it's what the "protected class" aspect is based on.
Cops are the people who actively choose to be the barrier between civilization and the uncivilized. So when someone kills a cop, they're not just breaking the laws of society/civilization, they're weakening the overall ability to keep civilization civil.

This sounds like a question of why would they put more effort into taking down someone that killed a cop vs someone that killed literally anyone else and that's just a run of the mill "one of us" thing.

I have a feeling that this guy may find himself in an interesting situation with some other cops pretty soon.. His days are numbered imo..

It's not that cops are a protected class it's the assumption is if someone is willing to kill a police officer they are more of a threat to the general public safety
A lot of murders are an act of passion killing a police officer is presumable part of a premeditated criminal act

There are usually more protected classes for agg. murder(and other offenses of violence) than just police officers. It usually includes prosecutors, judges, etc.

Why didn’t the hearing for him to be held without bond take place? Has to be the judge or DA’s office playing games to push it past 10 days. I wonder how much he actually had to put down.
quote:
When Francis was arrested, prosecutors filed paperwork to have him held without bond. That hearing didn’t happen within 10 days, as required, so after about three months passed, Francis’ defense attorney asked for a bond to be set. Legally, Judge Hilary Unger had to, and in November, she set bond at $500,000 on the capital murder charge.
quote:
Court records dating back 10 years, show that Francis is the only defendant charged with the capital murder of a police officer who is out on bond.
