11 year old Walt would love Afghanistan. Especially if he made a nice cup of chai.

Yes……our allies were a weird culture to say the least. A woman shows too much skin and they may stone her but their men can bugger boys, goats and camels!

I never had first hand confirmation of it but on my first tour to Iraq I asked my interpreter about it and he nodded and replied with “women are for making babies, boys are for making love”. Our platoon got a new interpreter soon after that.

I'm not a vet, but worked with a guy that told us he had to deal with it as the leader of a combined group of American and Afghan soldiers. I'll try to keep the summary of his story short. His version of the story is actually quite comical, but here are the basics to it.

The Afghans had a commander in his group that reported to him. They were on a mission in the field that required them to stop over night. He said that he ordered to Afghans to take the first watch, while his American soldiers went to sleep. He said he was awakened by one of his guys in a bit of a panic, stating that all the Afghans were gone. My coworker then called on the radio to the Afghan commander and had him report back to explain where everyone was. The Afghan commander told him they were all there, they were just off in the distance having sex.

The story goes on a bit, but after receiving an explanation of the practice, my coworker told the Afghan commander that would not be allowed. He said that was not taken too well and the Afghans became angry and started enough of a ruckus that he walked over to a 50 caliber and announced he would eliminate anyone who became a threat to his troops by disobeying orders.

He said he later had a conversation with the Afghan commander and told him he had no idea he was a homosexual. He said the Afghan commander became very angry and stated that he was not a homosexual, that it is only sex.

He also said the same thing someone else replied, that the local saying was "women are for babies, boys are for love". He said that men raping boys was not uncommon in that culture. He also told the story of a guy in his troop that was extremely young looking. He said the guy had blonde hair and looked like he was 15. Once when they entered a village, he said the village elders approached him and asked if they could trade some of their women for the young looking soldier.
