Jackson, MS is actually quite art deco…
quote:Isn't this Bailey (Jr?) High? I almost posted this myself. It reminds me of a fortress -- or a prison. As if the govt was telling people in the depression, "Dont worry -- this building is indestructible!". Sort of Deco- Brutal.
But the really weird thing: the architect was A Hays Town, LA tradionalist

I agree. The Jackson press building is beautiful. Fondren neighborhood is really beautiful too.

I've spent a lot of time in Jackson. That high school is very imposing and impressive.
If jackson were a functioning city, things would be very different. There are a lot of hidden gems there.

It’s been years since I’ve been to that part of Jackson, but I’ve seen that greyhound building still there in the last 15 years, do I would say yes.
Yes, that is Bailey magnet high school. It’s located between fondren and Belhaven. I’ve often wondered what the halls of that school looked like.

The interior is also a fantastic example of Art Deco:
Including a whole series of beautiful mural paintings on the 2nd floor:

Page Miss Glory is a 1936 Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies cartoon directed by Tex Avery. The short was released on March 7, 1936. The film uses Art Deco backgrounds and character designs.

Will Friedwald writes, "Page Miss Glory marks a rare instance when the two meanings of the word 'cartoon' come into conflict — as audiences understood it in 1935-36, the term could mean an animated one-reeler screened at the movie house or the non-animated but nevertheless lively cartoons found in magazines like Esquire and The New Yorker. Miss Glory looks like the drawings of legendary 1930s New Yorker cartoonists Peter Arno or John Held Jr. come to life... Miss Glory boasts several animated dance sequences that could be described as out-Buzz-ing Berkeley; the key sequences look like someone took the sketches from the fashion designer of one of the Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers classics and animated them."

One of the fascinating things about Art Deco is that while most folks agree that the beginning of World War II pretty much killed the Art Deco building style, with the International Style taking hold by the late 1940's. There were a few stragglers here & there due the design plans being paid for before the war & then not being able to be executed until after the war. Most examples of this are in Catholic Churches all over the United States. How late is this one (St. Mary of the Assumption in Whittier, California)? Try 1959 !!!
